Meet Michalis

About myself

Since my childhood, I've always been fascinated by the complexity of biological systems. I studied Biomedical Sciences in Greece and did an Erasmus internship in Spain. After completing my bachelor's studies, I wanted to pursue a master's degree abroad to gain new experiences. Italy and Padova are the best things to come at the right moment. Beautiful people, charming culture, and high-quality education are the highlights of this journey. The master's degree in Medical Biotechnologies will definitely be the cornerstone of my education, qualifying me for my future career.

Being an active student and citizen, it is challenging to find a balance between studying and extracurricular activities, yet I am grateful for all the experiences that have come. I have followed courses of Italian language provided by the University Language Centre, and I have participated in the Global Citizenship Programme, organized by the University of Padova, which has improved my intercultural skills and given me the opportunity to meet more international students. Also, I am pleased to be an information and guidance tutor for the University to support other students and help them orient throughout their educational process. Finally, I have just started my internship in a Mechanobiology laboratory of the University, being certain it will be a fruitful experience.

What do you like the most about the Medical Biotechnologies degree programme? Why would you recommend it to other students?

The master’s degree in Medical Biotechnologies offers a wide variety of courses that regard the biomedical field and are taught by Professors who are active researchers. This is the quality seal of the knowledge provided. Most importantly, this degree offers a six-month internship opportunity, during which you can acquire hands-on experience in a research laboratory of your interest, expertise in a specific field, and become an active member of the scientific community. Due to its workload, it is a path with many sacrifices, so I would recommend this master's for those who want to accept the challenge of working hard and productively for two years to pursue a degree necessary to follow a career as a researcher.

Is there any class or subject that stood out to you?

My preferred subject was the “Experimental Models in Vivo and in Vitro”, which aims at describing the available experimental models used in biomedical research laboratories. It is a course where students are engaged in topics regarding experimental design, critical analysis of data and model optimization. The active participation of students favors the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

What advice would you give to students wishing to apply for the Medical Biotechnologies degree programme?

I suggest you participate actively in the lectures, take notes, pose questions to your professors, and study in the afternoon after the lectures. You can also ask help from your tutors, who are fellow students and can advise you on how to organize your study in a more effective way. However, it is also important to grab the occasions to socialize with your colleagues, as feeling part of a group has an impact on your overall performance. Finally, be open to opportunities the University and the city may offer you. Good luck!

What do you like most about the City of Padua and why?

For me Padova is a little diamond. It has evolved over the centuries as a student-oriented city in virtue of its core, the University of Padova. It feels like there is a bidirectional relationship between this city and its young residents, where young people create a vivid and dynamic environment to be rewarded by the city’s peace and wisdom. The authentic Italian lifestyle in combination with the meticulously preserved culture of Padova have shaped my personality in a unique way.
I enjoy commuting by bicycle, studying in libraries of fascinating architecture, and having evening aperitivo in the picturesque squares. I am grateful to this city because it has gifted me with valuable friendships. It was heartwarming to be embraced by persons sharing similar ambitions and worries about the future.
