Meet An

About myself

My name is An and I’m currently a master student in Sustainable chemistry and technologies for circular economy (SCTCE) in Padova. After graduating with a Bachelor’s in Biochemistry in the United States, I came back to Vietnam and startwed working in Healthcare Quality Management. However, with an interest in Sustainable Development hanging in mind, I decided to change field and enrol in the Master’s degree of SCTCE at UniPD, which is one of the first of its kind in Europe. Also, my study in Italy is significantly facilitated by the “Invest Your Talent in Italy” scholarship, which is issued by the MAECI for 2 consecutive years.

What advice would you give to students wishing to study at UniPD?

Learn some Italian beforehand or attend Italian courses offered by UniPD. I was able to attend the first Italian course for free! Even when your degree does not require Italian knowledge, it always come in handy in everyday life and during internships.

Attend the Open Day webinar of the study programme of your choice to get a grasp of the degree’s contents and get to know your future faculty. It’s important to have an idea of what your career expectations are and know whether they fit with the goals of the programme.

Once admitted, start the house search as soon as possible as the competition can get really heated when the academic year comes close. Contact the Housing office for help, search on your own and simply talk to an acquaintance. Sometimes you might get lucky just by a random conversation.

What advice would you give to students on arrival?

Take opportunities to get to know the city and make new friends through Erasmus events and Orientation week. Their introduction to the city is super helpful for enjoying the beauty and liveliness of Padova during your stay.

Be open for new friendships! They make your experience in Padova a million times more interesting, from a simple evening spritz to day trips around the region.

Enjoy the eccentricity of Veneto. We know it’s really tempting to hop on a travelling spree to Roma, Milano, Sardegna or all around Europe, but don’t forget Veneto is also super fun to discover. My favourite destination is the city of Bassano del Grappa, upstream of the Brenta river. Our “headquarter” Padova is also full of cultural events, parks, theaters, museums, and shops, enough to keep its student population away from boredom.

    Why studying sciences in Padua?

My program is one of many courses at UniPD that are held completely in English and comprises a diverse international student body, which is 50% Italians and 50% internationals from various scientific backgrounds. In this way there are enough exchanges between people from both sides: Italy and the rest of the world.

Whenever I encountered challenges, our head of the department and professors were eager to help me out.

Other than lectures, we also took part in visits to facilities and extra-curricular seminars, such as Effective Communication, Machine learning or Nuclear Energy. Two summer schools were available to enhance our soft skills and familiarity with industrial technologies.
