In continuation of The Padua Freedom Lecture Series, the University of Padua welcomes 2011 Nobel Peace Prize winner, Yemeni journalist, politician and human rights activist, Tawakkol Karman on June 4 for her lecture Freedom is Peace is Freedom, which aims to explain why and how freedom is the fundamental ingredient for building peace, and vice versa. The Padua Freedom Lecture Series welcomes both Italian and international guests whose dedication to freedom embody the spirit and the heart of the University’s mottoUniversa Universis Patavina Libertas
In 2005, Tawakkol Karman co-founded the group Women Journalists Without Chains, an organization that works toward promoting civil rights and freedom of the press. Arrested several times as part of the Arab Spring uprising in her native country, Tawakkol Karman tells of her fight on the front line defending fundamental human rights, women’s emancipation and the affirmation of democracy. Karman shares her story in dialogue with Paolo De Stefani, professor of International Law and International Protection of Human Rights at The University of Padua, and the Italian National Director of the European Master’s Programme in Human Rights and Democratisation of the Global Campus of Human Rights. The lecture includes an introduction from Annalisa Oboe, Vice Rector of the University of Padua on Cultural, Social and Gender Relations. Il Bo Live journalist Mattia Sopelsa will moderate the lecture.
