Gertjan Verhasselt is Associate Professor of Papyrology at the Department of Historical and Geographic Sciences and the Ancient World. He holds a B.A. and M.A. in Classics, M.A. in Linguistics and M.Sc. in Management from KU Leuven (Belgium). In Leuven, he also obtained his Ph.D. in Ancient History in 2014 with a dissertation on the fragments of the Peripatetic philosopher Dicaearchus (supervised by Prof. Stefan Schorn and co-supervised by Prof. Willy Clarysse). He subsequently was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Oxford (2014-2015), KU Leuven (2015-2017), LMU Munich (2017-2021) and the University of Pisa (2022-2023) and was a Visiting Fellow at the Center for Hellenic Studies of Harvard University (2021). In Munich, he held a Humboldt Postdoctoral Research Fellowship and a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship. His research focuses on papyrology (both Greco-Egyptian and Herculanean), Greek philosophy (especially Aristotle and the Peripatos), Greek historiography and biography and Ancient Greek History (especially the Greek polis, constitutional history and Athenian democracy). His Ph.D. dissertation was published as a monograph by Brill in the Fragmente der Griechischen Historiker Continued series. Furthermore, he is a member of the Editorial Board of the newly founded journal Philosophical Papyri (published by Fabrizio Serra). He was awarded an ERC Starting Grant for the project FragArist, which aims to make a new edition of the fragments of Aristotle and reconstruct his lost works.
