Following the Swiss government's acceptance of the results of the popular referendum against mass immigration on 9 February 2014, the European Union and the Swiss authorities have decided to suspend negotiations on Switzerland's participation in Erasmus+. Switzerland is therefore ineligible for mobility actions for students and teachers under the Erasmus+ syllabus.

A transitional solution was therefore developed by establishing the Swiss European Mobility Programme to which the University has adhered with ad hoc agreements that provide for the mobility of those studying at the University of Padua to Swiss universities.
