Unipd raises over 500,000 euros in Afghan student scholarships

03.02.2022

Faces with the rapid deterioration of the political framework in Afghanistan, the University of Padua launched the Unipd 4 Afghanistan fundraising campaign in the summer of 2021. The campaign aimed to provide 12,000 euros per year needed to renew Afghan student scholarships. The goal was to support students with Afghan citizenship and guarantee them the right to an education while offering the culture exchange enjoyed by all international students at the University of Padua. The campaign quickly raised enough funds to award 52 scholarships. The Unipd 4 Afghanistan campaign has made it possible for the University of Padua to support 52 Afghan students (26 women and 26 men) already in Padua or about to arrive in our city.

Thanks to the support from donors (individuals, companies, foundations, associations, and organizations), the “Unipd 4 Afghanistan” fundraising campaign has raised 515,000 euros, making it possible to cover more scholarships.
In a statement from the University of Padua Rector Daniela Mapelli:
“The more than 500,000 euros raised for Afghan students are an exceptional demonstration of solidarity and acceptance. I made appeals to our local territory in hopes of a positive response. Donations not only arrived from Veneto but from across Italy. I extend my gratitude to all our donors: associations, organizations, companies, foundations, and individuals. Their contribution has made this possible, and I thank them on behalf of the entire University of Padua community. We will continue to monitor the dramatic situation in Afghanistan”.

Our community began supporting Afghan students with their generous and quick responses. The actions define society by offering us hope in the path to lead us out of the darkness.
