Remember Maryam Mirzakhani

31.05.2023

Dedicated to the Iranian mathematician Maryam Mirzakhani, Remember Maryam Mirzakhani is a photographic exhibition curated by Thais Jordao and created by Rafael Meireles. The Tullio Levi-Civita Department of Mathematics of the University of Padua will host the exhibition in the Torre di Archimede courtyard weekdays (8:30 am - 6:30 pm) from May, 31 until June 20, 2023.

As part of the International Day of Women in Mathematics on May 12, the initiative also marks the birthdate of the late female mathematician who passed away prematurely in 2017.

The photographic exhibition begins on Wednesday 31 May with a performance by the Department of Mathematics Corollario choir, followed by a presentation and discussion related to the department’s commitment to gender balance.

The event welcomes the University of Padua Delegate for Equal Opportunity Policies, Gaya Spolverato, and the Director of the Tullio Levi-Civita Department of Mathematics, Bruno Chiarellotto.

First introduced during the World Meeting for Women in Mathematics in Rio de Janeiro in 2018, the photographic exhibition is now hosted annually by organizations and institutions around the world.

Born in 1977 in Tehran, Maryam Mirzakhani became a professor of mathematics at Stanford University in 2008. As a leading expert on geometry and dynamical systems, Mirzakhan was awarded the Fields Medal for her outstanding contributions to the dynamics and geometry of Riemann surfaces and their moduli spaces in 2014.
