PROMYS Italia, in Padua to experience mathematics
16.07.2025
The University of Padua promotes and supports the in-depth study of mathematics for young women and men in high schools, offering them the opportunity to discover a more fascinating perspective on a subject often considered unappealing, thanks to the PROMYS program. Already active in Boston, Oxford, and India, in 2025, Padua will be the first and only Italian location for PROMYS.
PROMYS Italy is a summer study program designed to help talented and motivated high school students, both female and male, to explore the world of mathematics in depth. Supported by a community of peers, tutors, and researchers, participants have the opportunity to transform their school-based approach to numbers into creative thinking.
From July 15 to August 26, 2025, 18 high school students, including 6 females and 12 males, selected based on their solutions to a set of problems, will gather in Padua for this unique experience. These students come from various nationalities: Chinese (9), Italian (4), American (2), Romanian (1), Swiss (1), and Turkish (1).
To guide and support these young participants, five tutors or "counselors" have been appointed, chosen from undergraduate and graduate students in Mathematics. The tutors, three males and two females, come from the universities of Padua and Milan. The courses will be held at the Department of Mathematics at the University of Padua, while students and tutors will be accommodated at the Collegio Mazza residence.
At PROMYS, participants tackle fundamental mathematical problems that require perseverance and creativity, aiming to stimulate curiosity and promote an exciting learning journey. The program focuses on developing an autonomous and innovative mathematical mindset, useful in various professional fields. PROMYS values mathematics as a human activity best experienced in an educational environment rich in interaction and mutual support among participants, university students, teachers, and researchers.
PROMYS Italy offers an opportunity for young math enthusiasts, providing them with a stimulating environment to develop their skills and discover the creative side of mathematics. Through this program, the University of Padua aims to dispel the myth of mathematics as a difficult and unattractive subject, showing instead how experiencing mathematics can be an exciting and discovery-filled adventure.
