24.09.2025

Marco Marani has been appointed as a member of the American Geophysical Union (AGU), joining an exclusive group of 52 scientists in 2025. The AGU, the largest global association dedicated to Earth and space sciences, has over 60,000 members in more than 137 countries and each year selects a limited number of individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the field. Since 1962, less than 0.1% of AGU members are chosen annually as honorary members.

Honorary members of the AGU are recognised for their scientific excellence, demonstrated through discoveries, innovations, or significant advancements in Earth and space sciences. Marco Marani, full professor and director of the Centre for Studies on the Impacts of Climate Change (CRITICAL) at the University of Padua (Rovigo Campus), was selected for his exemplary leadership and remarkable scientific contributions, particularly in the field of coastal geomorphology and modelling extreme events related to climate change.

The reasons for his selection highlight how Marco Marani's work has redefined the fields of hydrology, geomorphology, and climate risk. His highly influential career spans various areas, from inland and coastal hydrology to ecohydrology, from fluvial and tidal morphodynamics to innovative statistical methods for estimating extreme geophysical events. By integrating theory, fieldwork, and remote sensing, he has improved the understanding of sediment transport and the hydrology of transitional coastal environments, thanks to a profound knowledge of the underlying physical processes.

Upon receiving the news of his recognition, Marco Marani stated, "The AGU has been my home throughout my scientific journey. Receiving this recognition from my fellow AGU scientists is an honour greater than I could have hoped for. It is also a recognition for the Italian and Padua scientific school, where I was trained and to which I owe the opportunity to tackle the most current and exciting scientific issues at an international level."

The award will be conferred during the AGU General Assembly, which will be held in New Orleans, Louisiana, from 15 to 19 December 2025.
In line with the theme of AGU25, "Where Science Connects Us," the award ceremony will celebrate the extraordinary achievements of scientists from around the world.
