Language policies for local and global communication
Through the document "Language policies for local and global communication", the University of Padova provides some guidelines on the use of Italian and English languages in the University's institutional communication and outlines the measures to be taken to ensure intercultural, inclusive and effective communication.
The University encourages the cultivation of the Italian language at all times of university and academic life, not only for its power to create, share and transfer knowledge in the context of reference, but also to produce social cohesion; promotes an inclusive and equal use of language that conveys the values of equity, openness and inclusion that inspire the University Statute.
Unipd also promotes a multilingual life and the learning of content through English or other vehicular languages to encourage the development of an international academic community, facilitate intercultural communication and cooperation at all levels of education and research. This document also aims to support researchers in achieving the language skills necessary to fully participate to the global scientific dialogue.
Further objectives of the document are to provide specialized language preparation for academic, technical and administrative staff in order to provide high quality services and ensure international competitiveness; establish, monitor and support the achievement and maintenance of academic language proficiency requirements for students and staff, both for Italian and English; to provide guidelines on the linguistic quality of courses and teachings taught in English.
The document, approved by the Academic Senate in June 2020, was born from an initiative of Annalisa Oboe, Vice Rector for Cultural, Social and Gender Relations; Laura Nota, delegate for inclusion and disability; Alessandro Paccagnella, pro-rector for international relations.
