Renovated and updated MapFly portal by Unipd
10.03.2026
The University of Padua, custodian of a vast cartographic heritage dating back to 1668, announces the update of MapFly, its advanced WebGIS system. This update follows the initial project launched in 2020 and completed in 2021, which had already enhanced and made accessible the rich archive of over 40,000 maps preserved in the Libraries of Geography and Geosciences.
After five years of use, feedback from users and new ideas have led to the creation of an improved version of the portal. Inspired by the model of the USGS (United States Geological Survey) cartographic portal, the new web app has been adapted to meet the specific needs of the University of Padua.
This update, funded by the University Library Center, relied on the contributions of librarians from the University and technicians from the Department of Geosciences, while the development was entrusted to the technology partner Esri Italia.
The renovated MapFly portal features a more intuitive and user-friendly interface, also optimized for use on mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. Users can now perform searches by drawing areas of interest, navigating by points on the basemap, and searching for place names. Filters for scale, year, and type of maps have been added, and advanced functionalities such as distance and area measurement and basemap modification have been implemented.
