The Dark Face of Nuclear

03.11.2025

On Monday, 3rd November, the Beato Pellegrino complex will host the inauguration of the photographic exhibition "The Dark Face of Nuclear" by Pierpaolo Mittica, the central event of the series "On the Scene of (Eco)Crime: The Sites of Čornobyl’ and Semej/Semipalatinsk," a programme of meetings dedicated to the memory of the nuclear disasters of the twentieth century.

The exhibition, curated by VisionArt22 APS in collaboration with the Umane Tracce Photography Award and funded by the Department of Linguistic and Literary Studies, presents images from the reportages "Chernobyl 40 Years Later" and "Semipalatinsk." The photographs powerfully convey both the ethical and aesthetic impacts of nuclear experiments.

The day begins at 9:00 with the screening of the film "Chernobyl. A Chronicle of Difficult Weeks" (1987) by Volodymyr Ševčenko, introduced by Claudia Fiorito from the University of Padua. This is followed at 10:30 by a discussion with Pierpaolo Mittica, moderated by Enzo Cortini.

In the afternoon, after the theatrical reading by the Central and Southeastern European Language Theatre Workshop of the DiSLL, directed by Pierantonio Rizzato, there will be a guided visit to the photographic exhibition led by Pierpaolo Mittica.

Admission is free and open to the public.
The exhibition is open until 19 December 2025 during DiSLL's opening hours (Monday-Friday, 8:00-19:00).

The initiative is part of a series of events promoted by the Department of Linguistic and Literary Studies of the University of Padua as part of its research and cultural dissemination activities.
