The University of Padua celebrates Italian Republic Day

30.05.2023

On Friday 2 June 2023, the University of Padua and the City of Padua celebrate the 77th anniversary of the Italian Republic.

Upon the conclusion of the opening ceremony scheduled in Piazza dei Signori (9 am), the University of Padua will present a space dedicated to the Cittadella della Repubblica in Piazza della Frutta.

The celebration is an opportunity to discuss the active role the University played during the Resistance.  By engaging with the public, the University recalls the impact of Rector Concetto Marchesi and Rector Egidio Meneghetti during these volatile years. Reminding us why the University of Padua is the only educational institution awarded with the Gold Medal of Military Valour.  And to deliberate over the referendum on the institutional form of the State held on 2 June 1946, which by popular vote, led to the birth of the Republic and the election of a Constituent Assembly.

As part of the celebration, the Archive of the University of Padua will organize several initiatives honouring Egidio Meneghetti.

On the occasion, classes are suspended and the central administration offices are closed. Study rooms and libraries are open with revised opening hour.
