28.04.2022

Unipd is among the top hundred universities according to THE Impact Rankings. An important recognition of the University of Padua’s role in delivering the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The international newspaper Times Higher Education (THE) prepared the published results of the fourth edition of the University Impact Rankings that aims to highlight the efforts of the higher education and research sector in delivering the 17 Sustainable Development Goals set by the United Nations in 1987. The ranking represents the work an institution has placed in influencing the community beyond its primary objective of teaching and conducting research. Rather, the ranking evaluates an institution’s contribution to society’s well-being and knowledge transfer by measuring it according to the Sustainable Development Goals - SDGs defined by the United Nations.

The Time Higher Education Impact Ranking assessment is rapidly establishing itself internationally, as can be seen from the number of participating universities (1406), which in part coincides with those surveyed by the more familiar Times Higher Education World University Ranking.

The Impact Ranking places the University of Padua 76th in the world, climbing 23 positions from its 99th ranking in 2021.

The index developed is based on the results obtained from SDG 17 - Partnerships for the Goals (supporting the SDGs through collaboration), an indispensable prerequisite for participation in the ranking, and the best three results obtained concerning the other SDGs. By analyzing the rankings for the individual Objectives, the University of Padua achieves the best result in SDG 4 Quality Education, ranking in 24th place, slightly down compared to last year. The SDG 4 ranking considers commitments made by an institution to ensure inclusiveness and equitable quality education while promoting inclusive equal learning opportunities. Achieving its second-best result in SDG 11 - Sustainable Cities and Communities, where the university ranks 25th in the world (a marked improvement compared to 47th place in 2021). This index measures environmental sustainability practices and the commitment to enhancing the historical, artistic and cultural heritage. The third best position is in SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-Being, 47th place in the world (84th in 2021). This ranking considers how much the institution can promote a healthy lifestyle and ensure social well-being, reducing the incidence of diseases.

Finally, the university is confirmed among the top hundred universities in the world for its commitment to SDG 9 - Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, where the University of Padua ranks in 49th place. This index measures investments in infrastructures including, transport, irrigation, energy and information and communication technologies that are the basis for pursuing and implementing sustainable development and empowering communities. Followed by Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8, 52nd place) and finally Gender Equality (SDG 5, 63rd place).
