According to Italian Ministry of the Interior data, around 158,000 migrants landed in Italy in 2023, which marks 50% more than in 2022 and over 130% more than in 2021. Those forced to leave their countries of origin face uncertainty through a tiring journey. Aimed at reaching Europe with the hope of living freely and taking positive steps for a better future, such young people include those from Afghanistan, Ukraine, Iran, and other at-risk countries.
Faithful to its motto Universa Universis Patavina Libertas, the University of Padua is committed to ensuring liberty and freedom for all. Therefore, the University supports various initiatives for the reception of people with refugee status, asylum seekers, and people fleeing their country. One of these is the Students at Risk campaign through which the University, thanks to the generosity of many donors, makes numerous scholarships available annually.
The meeting on 27 June is an opportunity to hear the true stories of young people fleeing from their countries of origin due to conflicts, discrimination, and limitations on freedom, who share their dreams of hope and redemption. These young people are aware of the fortune scholarships represent for them and, consequently, for their families and their communities.
Monica Fedeli, Vice Rector of the Third Mission and Regional Relations, introduces a roundtable composed of journalist Fausto Biloslavo, the director of Corriere del Veneto, Corriere del Trentino, Corriere dell' Alto Adige and Corriere di Bologna, Alessandro Russello, the councilor for Territory, culture, security and migratory flows of the Veneto Region, Cristiano Corazzari, the writer and journalist Pamela Ferlin, the director of the ESU of Padua, Gabriele Verza, and, journalist Toni Capuozzo.
Also participating are Donors Elisa Massacesi, Human Resources Manager of Lundbeck Pharmaceuticals Italy and Rita Chiappa, National Program Director of the Soroptimist Club, and Geneviève Henrot, professor at the University of Padua and member of the Soroptimist Club.
