The Padua University Sitting Volleyball Team is the first of its kind in Italy

17.01.2022

While it made its debut in Italy eight years ago, sitting volleyball finally arrives at the University of Padua, becoming the first team of its kind in Italy.

A press conference on January 13officially presented the project for establishing the new team as part of the starting point of a path that began in 2020. Concerning the Padua Marathon and thanks to the University of Padua Law student, athlete and Italian sitting volleyball ambassador Nadia Bala, the University has launched an active fundraising campaign supporting the first Italian University Sitting Volleyball Team.

Invented in the Netherlands in 1956 as a rehabilitative technique, sitting volleyball arrived in Italy in 2013 thanks to the recognition by the Italian Paralympic Committee (CIP) and the Italian Volleyball Federation (FIPAV). The highly inclusive discipline is available to athletes with and without disabilities as long as the torso maintains contact with the floor when playing the ball.

The core group comprised of 14 University of Padua student-athletes began practising the sport with their inclusive team of those with and without disabilities. The Padua University Sitting Volleyball Team will be registered at CUS Padova.

Managed by Polisportiva Qui, training takes place at the Trecenta Sports Hall in Rovigo that provides some of the essential equipment needed for sitting volley, including an officially regulated indoor court (10 x 6 m) and lowered net (approx. 1m).
