Honorary Doctorate Degree to Antonio Tizzano

Upon the resolution from the University of Padua Department of Public, International and European Union Law, the faculty of doctorate courses confer, on November 2 at the Aula Magna of palazzo del Bo, 10 a.m., the honorary doctorate in Law to Antonio Tizzano. As Professor Emeritus of European Union Law at La Sapienza University of Rome, Prof Tizzano also holds the position of Vice-President Emeritus of the European Court of Justice.
Recognized "for the extraordinary role he has played in promoting the integration of Europe through law, Prof Tizzano is one of the most influential jurists in Europe today. By putting into practice his theories, Prof Tizzano has brought forth a revolutionary and consolidated idea of law that has spread across national dimensions. Alongside an enduring commitment as a scholar and educator, he has brought forth an exceptional impact on the development of the European Union's legal system in the 18 years within the Court of Justice. He has contributed to the recognition of an autonomous legal system while strengthening the protection of individual rights. Through collaborations between national jurisdictions and the Court of Justice, Prof Tizzano has shown a level of effectiveness on which a common legal system stands, even when faced with recalcitrant Member States."
Antonio Tizzano has held some of the highest roles across various positions within the Court of Justice for more years than any other Italian. As Advocate General at the Court of Justice from 2000 to 2006, Judge at the Court of Justice from 2006 to 2018, Prof Tizzano also stood as the Vice-President of the Court of Justice of the European Union from 2015 to 2018.
Prof Tizzano will hold his lectio magistralis during the ceremony.

The ceremony marks the commencement of the Il diritto dell'Unione Europea nei rapporti tra ordinamenti conference organized by the Associazione italiana studiosi di diritto dell'Unione Europea - AISDUE, for which Prof Tizzano sits as president.
