Honorary degree to Carlo Messina

On Wednesday 13 March, with the resolution of the University of Padua Department of Economic and Business Sciences “Marco Fanno", the University of Padua will confer an Honorary master’s degree in economics and finance to Carlo Messina.

Carlo Messina, who graduated with a degree in economics and commerce in 1987, for more than 20 years held positions in banks that later became part of the Intesa Sanpaolo Group, of which he has been managing director and chief executive officer since 2013.

Considered one of Europe's leading bankers, Messina leads the largest banking group in Italy. The Intesa Sanpaolo Group is among the top 5 banks in the euro are, and with the 94,000 employees the bank provides over 430 billion in loans to businesses and families and 1,3 trillion in financial assets. Under his leadership, the Group has expressed a strong ESG commitment, achieving a top global ranking for social impact and attention to environmental issues. Intesa Sanpaolo has, in addition, always paid great attention to the university world by supporting research and supporting all male and female students to foster the development of talents.

Messina has received various awards including the “Guido Carli” Award as banker of the year (2015), the Executive Master in Finance Honoris Causa from CUOA Business School (2016), and the Corporate Social Responsibility Award (2017) from the Foreign Policy Association, as well as an active member of the Knight of Labor since 2017. In the academic field he has taught Economics of financial intermediaries at the Luiss Business School and Corporate Finance at the University of Ancona and is a Visiting Fellow at Oxford University. Outside the Intesa Sanpaolo Group he is a member of the ABI Executive Committee, a Fellow of the Foreign Policy Association in New York, and an advisor to Bocconi University. He received an honorary degree in management engineering from Bari Polytechnic University in 2022.

The ceremony will be host in the Aula Magna of Palazzo del Bo, at 3 p.m, and will be also streamed online.
