Exhibitions in Padua during the 24th International Congress of Byzantine Studies

On the occasion of the 24th International Congress of Byzantine Studies, from August 21 to August 27, Venice and Padua will be hosting 12 digital and physical exhibitions open to visitors.

In particular, Padua hosts two exhibitions open to the public.

Byzantine Scholars and Greek Students in Renaissance PaduaAugust 23 - September 11, 2022, at Palazzo Zuckermann, Corso Garibaldi, 33, Padova.
The exhibition is promoted and organised by the Comune di Padova – Musei Civici di Padova and the Department of Linguistic and Literary Studies of the University of Padua. It reconstructs the relationship between Byzantium and Padua through the history of the study of the Greek language in the city and its university during the Renaissance. The topic is illustrated through a selection of manuscripts and printed books from Paduan libraries (Biblioteca Civica, Biblioteca Universitaria, Biblioteca del Seminario, Archivio storico dell’Università).

The exhibition, with free access, is open every day from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. (closed on Monday).

Byzantine art through the eyes of Italian scholars. Documents and images from 20th - centurytravels, August 25 - August 30, at Palazzo Liviano, Piazza Capitaniato (Mezzanino e Aula Diano).
This exhibition devoted to Byzantine art history in Italy will be held in Palazzo Liviano, formerly the Humanities Faculty – a building erected, decorated, and frescoed in the 1930s by Ettore Fagiuoli, Giò Ponti, and Massimo Campigli, who were among the leading architects and painters of their day.
Through a range of partly unpublished documents, visitors will have the opportunity to explore the paths taken by the leading scholars in this discipline: Adriano Alpago Novello (1932-2005), Sergio Bettini (1905-1986), Giuseppe Bovini (1915-1975), Géza de Francovich (1902-96), Fernanda de’ Maffei (1917-2011), Giuseppe Gerola (1877-1938), and Paolo Verzone (1902-1986).

The International Congress of Byzantine Studies is the world’s largest scholarly event devoted to the history and culture of the Byzantine Empire. It is organised by the Italian Association of Byzantine Studies in collaboration with Università Ca' Foscari and the University of Padua and it is part of the celebration of the 800th Anniversary of the University of Padua.
