Developed in Padua "the Rossi number" offers a new pure number towards unprecedented perspectives in the field of pharmacology

20.01.2023

Research by Davide Rossi in collaboration with Nicola Realdon of the Laboratory of Pharmaceutical Technology of the Department of Pharmaceutical Science at the University of Padua is the first to develop a pure number capable of determining the deformation (D) generated from the contact between a liquid and a particular substance, called Perfluoropolyether Liquid Film.

Published in Advance in Contact Angle Wettability and Adhesion, the work unveils the value of the Rossi number (Rn), which corresponds to the typical deformation (D) of a tested liquid in contact with another liquid. The publication of Determination of Surface Tension Components of Aqueous Solutions Using Fomblin HC/25® Perfluoropolyether Liquid Film as a Solid Substrate, opens up a new line of research in the field of tensiometry (the study of surface tension).

Davide Rossi, who is currently associated with the University of Padua, explains, “The Rossi number is the result of an innovative process called the Solid-Like Methodology (SLM), whereas the number is applied experimentally to liquids of different natures. The Rossi number makes it possible to demonstrate the characterization of natural or artificial liquids by different properties. The work could open new possibilities in many research fields, with particular relevance to pharmacological, biological, and medical areas.”

Nicola Realdon concludes by saying, “Based on the results, the Rossi number is proving to be a very important parameter for determining the characteristics of systems of technological-pharmaceutical interest.”
