23.08.2021

Published by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy on Sunday, August 15, the 2021 edition of the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) is one of the most accredited international rating systems for evaluating universities and research bodies. Based in the People’s Republic of China, the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy agency scrutinized over 2000 universities, with only the best 1000 institutions making the list.

As such, the University of Padua sees prestigious results as it reaches between the top 151 and 200 institutions on a world scale and among the best Italian institutions alongside La Sapienza, the University of Milan, and the University of Pisa.

The ARWU ranking methodology is based on six distinct indicators.  Alumni, indicating the total number of alumni winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals. Award, indicating the total number of staff winning Nobel Prizes. Hi-Ci, indicating the number of Highly Cited Researchers selected by Clarivate Analytics. N&S, indicating the number of papers published in Nature and Science. PUB, indicating the total number of papers indexed in Science Citation Index-Expanded and Social Science Citation Index. PCP, which provides for a sort of productivity per capita by weighing the score of the above five indicators divided by the number of full-time equivalent academic staff.

The two indicators relating to scientific productivity (N&S and PUB) drove the positive results published on behalf of the University of Padua. This consolidates our national leadership and demonstrates our high level of global competitiveness. The University also showed improvement this year based on the parameter on the number of Highly Cited researchers, further confirming the University's scientific excellence.

Reading the University of Padua results in the last edition of THE Impact Ranking as we reached 14th place in the world for quality of teaching, the excellence we have achieved in research activity allows us to develop innovative training courses that significantly shapes our community, our region, and Italy’s academic status.

The Rector notes that as the University leads itself towards celebrating 800 years of its history, that this recognition came about and was made possible even during a global pandemic.  This confirms that high-level scientific activities are a testament to a stable and consistent path of growth for which the University has undertaken in recent years.
