30 aprile 2025 - Using film, images, charts and graphs to promote critical thinking

Online – Zoom

Wednesday 30 April 2025 - 14:30 - 16:30

The workshop will be in English.

Abstract

There are many positive reasons why educators should include visual elements in their teaching materials. However, students often fail to get the full benefit from the films, images, charts and graphs that educators present, so often they remain an underexploited resource.

In this practical session, we will demonstrate a number of ways teachers can exploit media such as short films, visual images, charts and graphs to encourage students to reflect, cooperate, and employ various critical thinking skills effectively so that visuals become a tool to promote active learning.

Abstract

The workshop will introduce participants to the methodology of Team-Based Learning (TBL), with practical examples to apply it to the various subject areas. Participants will learn how to backward plan their course, construct problem-situations and design structured written tests. They will also be given strategies for integrating TBL into their discipline, improving student engagement through active learning.

22 May 2025 - Teaching with Debate: Disputation and Rhetoric as a Novantiqua Methodology of Active Learning

In Presence - University Language Centre

Thursday 22 May 2025 14:30 - 16:30

The workshop will be in Italian.

Abstract

Do we want innovative and active didactics? And what should active and innovative didactics look like? We need ancient disciplines.

Once upon a time...

Once upon a time there was oratory and eloquence. Today there is public speaking.

Once upon a time there was debate. Today there is debate.

Once upon a time there was controversy. Today there is the talking show.

Once upon a time there was apologetics. Today there is advocacy.

The adoption of the controversial teaching mode and the extension of the formula of the regulated dispute to different disciplines have proved successful and fruitful for the acquisition of transversal skills of a cognitive, communicative and relational nature.

During the workshop, participants will learn how to make lessons more dialogical and controversial, recovering the art of disputatio and argumentative rhetoric as a teaching methodology.

4 June 2025 - Exploring and Experiencing the Potential of Memes in Teaching and Learning Processes

In Presence - Centro Linguistico di Ateneo

Wednesday 4 June 2025 - 14:30 - 16:30

The workshop will be in Italian.

Abstract

Through practical examples, the workshop will highlight the potential benefits of using memes in teaching, such as increasing student engagement, learning motivation and improving long-term memory. Strategies for using memes as cognitive activation tools and support for formative assessment will also be explored, enabling teachers to exploit these artefacts as stimuli to generate discussion, arouse curiosity and identify potential misconceptions about the “critical” content of the discipline being taught.

  10 June 2025 - Think share compare

In presence - University Language Centre

Tuesday 10 June 2025 14:30 - 16:30

The workshop will be in Italian.

Abstract

The seminar aims to explore and put into practice the didactic strategy ‘Think, Share, Compare’, an active and inclusive method that promotes critical thinking, collaboration and comparative reflection. Starting with concrete examples and case studies from university contexts, we will analyse together the potential of this technique in the construction of participatory learning environments.

Participants will be involved in practical exercises, with the aim of directly experiencing the methodology and reflecting on its possible applications in their own subject areas. The meeting is designed as an interactive workshop, in which moments of presentation, discussion and work in small groups will alternate.

The intention is to offer simple but effective tools to facilitate the active participation of students, even in contexts with high cognitive density or heterogeneous backgrounds and experiences.

Prof. Campagnaro Marnie

17 June 2025 - Storytelling in the Humanities and STEM fields

In presence - University Language Centre

Tuesday 17 June 2025 14:00 - 17:00

The workshop will be in Italian.

Abstract

This seminar aims to raise awareness of the potential of storytelling and digital storytelling in education. Both traditional and digital storytelling have proven to be effective in stimulating reflective practice, making tacit knowledge explicit and enhancing the learning experience of students.

The seminar will begin by exploring the theoretical foundations of storytelling, examining how narratives function as cognitive tools that help students organise, contextualise and reflect on disciplinary content. The neuroscientific aspects of storytelling will be analysed, exploring how stories activate brain processes that facilitate greater engagement, emotional connection and improved retention of concepts.

Through practical examples and case studies from different disciplinary contexts, ways in which storytelling can be implemented to develop future professional skills and critical thinking in students will be illustrated.
