The University of Milan - Bicocca, which won the title in 2025, hosted this year's edition of the CUI, the Italian University Team Chess Championship, on Saturday March 7.

The University of Padua claimed the 2026 title among 20 university teams from all over Italy: Ancona, Bologna, Chieti, Genoa, Milan (Bicocca, Bocconi, Humanitas, Polytechnic, San Raffaele, Statale), Padua, Pavia, Cattolica Piacenza, Pisa, Rome Sapienza, Polytechnic of Turin, Trento, Varese, and Venice Ca' Foscari.

"There are no particular strategies in a chess sense per se: each of us played our systems and our repertoire as if we were competing in an individual tournament," commented team captain Jacopo Gennari on behalf of the team. "The real team strategy comes into play when one needs the courage to take risks to secure a result that ensures victory for the team, or at the same time knowing how to be satisfied with a draw when pride would prefer a personal victory. Both of these qualities were present among us, and I believe it is this team spirit that helped us achieve our result."

Unipd triumphed over the best Italian universities, defeating Milan Bocconi in the final and winning the title that had narrowly eluded them in previous editions. Milan Bicocca came in third place. This victory mirrors the successes of 2022 and 2023, which were held online.

L'Università di Milano - Bicocca, che ha vinto il titolo nel 2025, ha ospitato, sabato 7 marzo, l'edizione di quest'anno del CUI, il campionato universitario italiano a squadre di scacchi.

L'Università di Padova si è aggiudicata il titolo 2026 su 20 squadre universitarie provenienti da tutta Italia: Ancona, Bologna, Chieti, Genova, Milano (Bicocca, Bocconi, Humanitas, Politecnico, San Raffaele, Statale), Padova, Pavia, Cattolica Piacenza, Pisa, Roma Sapienza, Politecnico di Torino, Trento, Varese e Venezia Cà Foscari. 

«Non ci sono strategie particolari in senso scacchistico di per sé: ognuno di noi ha giocato i suoi sistemi e il suo repertorio come se stesse facendo un torneo individuale - ha commentato a nome della squadra il capitano Jacopo Gennari -. La vera strategia di squadra arriva nel momento in cui bisogna avere il coraggio di rischiare per ottenere un risultato che assicuri la vittoria ai compagni, o allo stesso tempo sapersi accontentare di un pareggio quando l'orgoglio vorrebbe una vittoria personale: entrambe queste cose non sono mancate tra di noi e credo sia anche questo spirito di squadra ad averci fatto raggiungere il risultato».

Unipd ha avuto la meglio sulle migliori università italiane, sconfiggendo in finale Milano Bocconi e vincendo il titolo che nelle edizioni precedenti era sempre sfuggito per pochissimo. Terza classificata Milano Bicocca. Bissiamo così i successi del 2022 e 2023, che però si erano disputati online.
