University Hospital
The history of relations between the Hospital and the University goes back a long way: as early as the 16th century there are records of practical lessons held at the patient's bedside, in the Hospital of St Francis (founded in the city during the first half of the 15th century and active until the end of the 18th). The combination of healthcare, teaching and research carried on subsequently at the Ospedale Giustinianeo (opened in 1798), is delivered today through the structures of the National Health Service, directed by medical professors and run by university staff, as is the case with the General Hospital managed by the Padova Healthcare Trust.
