Scientists are even closer in their search for life in the universe, thanks to a study by Prof Nicoletta La Rocca of the Department of Biology at the University of Padua. The work was made possible with multidisciplinary coordination of research groups focused on biology, bioinformatics, engineering, and astronomy.

Published in Frontiers in Plant Science, the study Transcriptomic and photosynthetic analyses of Synechocystis sp. PCC6803 and Chlorogloeopsis fritschii sp. PCC6912 exposed to an M-dwarf spectrum under an anoxic atmosphere demonstrates how cyanobacteria exposed to simulated conditions of exoplanets with an anoxic atmosphere and illuminated by a red dwarf star show good growth and photosynthesis capacity thanks to specific gene regulation.

Cyanobacteria are microorganisms with a very ancient origin. They appeared about 3.5 billion years ago and developed a revolutionary metabolic process, oxygenic photosynthesis, which profoundly changed the Earth's atmosphere.

Scientific Director of two projects financed by the Italian Space Agency, Prof La Rocca explains,

“We study the acclimatization capabilities of two cyanobacteria, Chlorogloeopsis fritschii sp. PCC6912, capable of using far-red light in addition to visible light for its growth, and Synechocystis sp. PCC6803, capable of using only visible light to grow. Surprisingly, the oxygen-free atmosphere did not significantly impact the response of the two organisms. The results show how both organisms are predisposed to anoxia and how simulated red dwarf star light can be harvested effectively and is sufficient to maintain a metabolism like that to which the organisms are exposed to sunlight. Unlike Synechocystis sp. PCC6803, Chlorogloeopsis fritschii sp. PCC6912 proved capable of using far-red light and showed the ability to acclimatize to the simulated light of a red dwarf star through a specific response, encoded in the organism's DNA."

The results of this study prove the adaptability and versatility of cyanobacteria and give important information on the potential contribution of far-red photosynthesis to the oxygenation of Earth's primordial atmosphere and are a positive signal for the search for life in exoplanets orbiting red dwarf stars.

The Biodiversity Garden greenhouses of the Botanical Garden will remain closed throughout 2024, due to the ongoing assessments aimed at investigating the condition of the glass panes affected by breakage.

Upon completion of the assessment, additional work to the greenhouses will ensure compliance with the most recent technical standards on glass curtain walls. The work will be coordinated with the already planned renovation work on the greenhouse roof, which was seriously damaged during a strong localized hailstorms in July 2018 and subsequently reoccurrence of the same phenomena in 2019 and 2022. Cushions will be replaced with the insertion of an additional layer of protection against hailstorms.

Estimated date of reopening will be posted before the start of the works, accompanied by a restyling and an enrichment of the botanical collections.

The Botanical Garden will receive restoration and maintenance work as part of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan to enhance Italian parks and gardens of cultural interest. With more that 227,000 visitors in 2023 alone, the University of Padua opened the Botanical Museum to the public by inaugurating a ancient book hub that gave a new life to the Vincenzo Pinali and Giovanni Marsili Historical Library of Medicine and Botany. In the autumn of 2023, the restoration of the statues of the Four Seasons and Theophrastus was completed. Cleaning and restoration work is currently underway on the fountains and aquatic plant tanks inside the ancient garden and the conservative restoration of the Guardian's House is being completed, destined to become the organizational center of the visit and public reception.

Restoration and maintenance work include:

  • cleaning of the Alicorno canal, as part of a collaboration with the Bacchiglione Brenta Consortium
  • cleaning of the water drainage system of the Old Garden
  • construction of the quarantine greenhouse and restoration of the bromeliad greenhouse
  • construction of a multiplication greenhouse and opening of the building site of the new orchid and cultivation greenhouses around the 19th-century greenhouses
  • creation of the lighting system, updating the wireless internet network and video surveillance system of the Old Garden

On Monday 19 February, the University of Padua inaugurated a new Mathematics Library space at the Torre Archimede via Trieste in Padua. The inauguration welcomes many participants, including Pro-Rectors Monica Salvadori, Matilde Girolami, and Carlo Pellegrino, as well as CAB Director Sebastiano Miccoli, Mathematics Department Director Bruno Chiarellotto, and a special performance by the Department Choir “il Corollario”.

The Mathematics Library is not only a place for study and research, but it has evolved as a space that promotes and shares math with science.

The restyling of the new space acts as a true library with library staff and interactive display cases that hold more than 30,500 books along open shelves. The Mathematics Library will be a place of research in mathematics and computer science, as well as the study of maths in a broad sense.

With 4 large rooms dedicated to students of the department, the library now includes 350 study stations equipped with electrical sockets (previously holding 120), as well as adjustable study tables, blackboards, and glass screens for users with special needs. The Mathematics Library study spaces will remain open from 8:30 am to 11 pm.
