The University of Padua has led and played a crucial role in the implementation and completion of the first advanced course for paediatric and neonatal care in Mozambique, and proudly celebrates the graduation of 14 highly specialised professionals. The official graduation ceremony took place on Tuesday, 3rd June, at the Faculty of Medicine of Eduardo Mondlane University in Maputo. Attending the event were: the Italian ambassador to Mozambique, Gabriele Annis; the director of the Faculty of Medicine of Eduardo Mondlane University, Jahit Sacarlal; and a delegation from Padua, including Liviana Da Dalt, former director of the Paediatric Emergency Department of the Department of Women’s and Children’s Health at the University of Padua, and Daniele Trevisanuto, neonatologist at the University of Padua and programme coordinator. Alongside them was Giorgia Gelfi, Cuamm Country Representative in Mozambique.
The project, presented in Maputo in November 2022, involved, in addition to the University of Padua, Eduardo Mondlane University of Maputo, the Catholic University of Mozambique in Beira, and Doctors with Africa Cuamm, with the support of the Mur. The University of Padua, as the leading institution of the initiative, contributed significantly to various activities: from the planning of training sessions and the study programme to proposals for distance learning and e-learning; from the selection of the teaching staff to the facilitation of intercultural exchanges between faculties; from facilitating access to educational activities for 20 students (5 from Beira) to the provision of materials and equipment useful for advanced training.
"The road to today has been very long; firstly, it was necessary to do extensive work between the three universities involved and get to know each other. Today, this ceremony demonstrates the strength of collaboration, and celebrating this important milestone fills us with pride," said Daniele Trevisanuto.
In Mozambique, this programme represents the first and only advanced training pathway dedicated to healthcare professionals, including doctors and nurses, offering them the opportunity to specialise in paediatric and neonatal emergencies. In the current context, where there is one doctor for every 50,000 inhabitants and the quality of care in paediatric and neonatal emergencies is unfortunately inadequate, the master’s programme addresses this need. This initiative aligns with the “Strategic Plan for Higher Education for the Decade 2011-2020” adopted by the Ministry of Education of Mozambique.

The University of Padua has led and played a crucial role in the implementation and completion of the first advanced course for paediatric and neonatal care in Mozambique, and proudly celebrates the graduation of 14 highly specialised professionals. The official graduation ceremony took place on Tuesday, 3rd June, at the Faculty of Medicine of Eduardo Mondlane University in Maputo. Attending the event were: the Italian ambassador to Mozambique, Gabriele Annis; the director of the Faculty of Medicine of Eduardo Mondlane University, Jahit Sacarlal; and a delegation from Padua, including Liviana Da Dalt, former director of the Paediatric Emergency Department of the Department of Women’s and Children’s Health at the University of Padua, and Daniele Trevisanuto, neonatologist at the University of Padua and programme coordinator. Alongside them was Giorgia Gelfi, Cuamm Country Representative in Mozambique.
The project, presented in Maputo in November 2022, involved, in addition to the University of Padua, Eduardo Mondlane University of Maputo, the Catholic University of Mozambique in Beira, and Doctors with Africa Cuamm, with the support of the Mur. The University of Padua, as the leading institution of the initiative, contributed significantly to various activities: from the planning of training sessions and the study programme to proposals for distance learning and e-learning; from the selection of the teaching staff to the facilitation of intercultural exchanges between faculties; from facilitating access to educational activities for 20 students (5 from Beira) to the provision of materials and equipment useful for advanced training.
"The road to today has been very long; firstly, it was necessary to do extensive work between the three universities involved and get to know each other. Today, this ceremony demonstrates the strength of collaboration, and celebrating this important milestone fills us with pride," said Daniele Trevisanuto.
In Mozambique, this programme represents the first and only advanced training pathway dedicated to healthcare professionals, including doctors and nurses, offering them the opportunity to specialise in paediatric and neonatal emergencies. In the current context, where there is one doctor for every 50,000 inhabitants and the quality of care in paediatric and neonatal emergencies is unfortunately inadequate, the master’s programme addresses this need. This initiative aligns with the “Strategic Plan for Higher Education for the Decade 2011-2020” adopted by the Ministry of Education of Mozambique.
An effort that, as highlighted by Giorgia Gelfi – Cuamm Country Representative in Mozambique, "best summarises Cuamm’s strategy in Mozambique and beyond: the specialised training of doctors and nurses as an essential lever for improving the quality of care and attention towards the most vulnerable, newborns and children, who thanks to the care of these professionals will have an extra chance."
