Every year, the University of Padua participates in the 1001 Vela Cup Trophy with a team composed of university students. The 1001VELAcup is a sailing event that takes place annually in September in Mondello, Sicily, featuring regattas with boats designed, built, and sailed by university students. The event sees participation from both Italian and international universities.

The University is represented by the Metis Vela Unipd team, a group of students from the University of Padua coming from various degree programs who share a passion for the sea and sailing. The Metis Vela Unipd project is associated with the Department of Industrial Engineering and has been welcoming students from numerous schools within the University for years, making interdisciplinarity its strength and providing the opportunity to put into practice what they have learned in class.

Within the competition, there is also the "Paolo Padova Trophy," which features crews consisting of one student and one faculty member.
