How to apply for a patent

The University of Padua promotes the valorisation of knowledge developed within its walls and its transfer from the academic world to the market and society.

Among the tools available to achieve these objectives is the patent, which aims to legally protect the result of innovative research by granting the owner the right to exclude others from producing, marketing, or importing products derived from the invention.

The University follows procedures for filing and managing patents based on research conducted within its institution, in accordance with the Patent Regulations and in harmony with the Code of Industrial Property (Codice della Proprietà industriale).

Patents and the University: Protecting Research Results

The University files patents based on the inventions of its researchers to protect the results of research conducted internally and to enhance the University's knowledge through interested parties looking to exploit it commercially. In particular, it offers support in the establishment of spin-off companies involving the researchers themselves, who will continue to develop the patented technology to bring it to the market with products and services.

The Code of Industrial Property  stipulates that inventions developed by university researchers belong to the University and must, therefore, be promptly reported to it.
Researchers are supported by patent specialists throughout the necessary process to verify patentability and to assess the opportunity to protect the results with a patent application or other tools, to facilitate their economic exploitation.
