Most of the waste found in the marine environment derives from a land-based origin that is transported towards coastal-marine ecosystems through rivers and canals. By managing the interception of waste in waterways as they pass through urban areas, plastic pollution along coastal and marine waterways can be greatly mitigated.

These and other findings are included in a study carried out on the waste collected in the canals of the city of Padua by a group of researchers from the Departments of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering, Industrial Engineering, and Biology under the coordination of Maria Cristina Lavagnolo, in collaboration with the Cooperativa Sociale Piovego.

Published in detritus, a Multidisciplinary Journal for Waste Resources & Residues, the study entitled Waste characterization in the urban canal network of Padova (Italy) to mitigate downstream marine plastic pollution shares results of the waste collection campaigns carried out in 2021 along three representative points of the channel network located in the historic center of Padua.

Approximately 500 kg of waste was collected and analysed in terms of size (particle size analysis) and the type of material (product analysis). Findings confirm that plastics account for over 47% of the waste with a particular abundance of disposable products, such as food packaging, shopping bags and beverage containers.

Researchers examined the waste collected over different seasons to estimate the total amount of waste that could be recovered over a single year from the canal network of the city of Padua. The work also highlights that the waste present on embankments and riparian vegetation is much greater than that present in the water.

The capacity of the riparian vegetation to act as a mechanical filter against waste, is of great  importance according to one of the authors of the research, Alberto Barausse, who is coordinating a Unipd research group working on the study and regeneration the canal network in Padua:

From 15 April to 20 May, in the Sala dei Giganti, with a special event in the Botanical Garden, five appointments between music and dissemination on the 50th anniversary of the death of the Venetian composer Gian Francesco Malipiero.
A special price ticket is reserved for Unipd students: only 1 euro (concert in the Botanical Garden excluded).

Saturday 15 April, at 8.45 p.m. in the Sala dei Giganti, Malipiero's orchestral reinterpretation of Antonio Vivaldi's instrumental catalogue.

With the title Eterni ritorni, the Fondazione Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto announces the third edition of Veneto contemporanea, the OPV Festival dedicated to contemporary Italian composers.

From 15 April to 20 May, in the Sala dei Giganti, with a special event in the Botanical Garden, five appointments between music and dissemination on the 50th anniversary of the death of the Venetian composer Gian Francesco Malipiero.

Saturday 15 April, at 8.45 p.m. in the Sala dei Giganti, Malipiero's orchestral reinterpretation of Antonio Vivaldi's instrumental catalogue.

Friday 28 April at 8.45 p.m. the Sala dei Giganti will welcome Hans Zender's orchestration of the first six songs contained in Schubert's collection Winterreise.

Sunday 30 April at the Botanical Garden, repeated in three shifts (at 18.30; 19.15 and 20.00), the strings of the Padua and Veneto Orchestra conducted by Marco Angius will be divided into four Quartets for the performance of Parsifal Vorspiel.

Friday 5 May,  at 8.45 p.m. in the Sala dei Giganti, there will be the performance of another cycle of songs, Mahler's Fünf Frühe Lieder in the orchestration of Luciano Berio. Friday 20 May at 8.45 p.m. in the Sala dei Giganti a concert dedicated to the celebration of Malipiero's anniversary conducted by Alessandro Cadario.

Fino al 29 maggio (ore 13) ci si può iscrivere alla 22esima edizione di Start Cup Veneto, competizione che intende stimolare la ricerca e l'innovazione tecnologica per sostenere lo sviluppo economico del territorio regionale, dando concretezza alle idee dei partecipanti e mettendoli in condizione di affrontare adeguatamente la fase di start up di una nuova impresa. Non solo sostegno in denaro, dunque, ma anche formazione e consulenza sui più importanti aspetti della gestione aziendale. Start Cup Veneto è una competizione tra persone che elaborano idee imprenditoriali innovative, finanziata dalle Università di Padova, Verona e IUAV.

Gli Atenei del Veneto, che organizzano assieme l’ormai famosa business plan competition, anche quest’anno intendono dare un forte segnale di come l’innovazione possa essere il motore del rilancio del nostro paese. I 5 team vincitori dei premi assoluti di Start Cup Veneto 2023 parteciperanno al “Premio nazionale per l’innovazione 2023 con finale a Padova, giovedì 26 ottobre, a Le Village Triveneto, che supporta la competizione, mentre UNISMART è sponsor dell'iniziativa.

Negli ultimi vent’anni i 1.723 gruppi iscritti hanno presentato 5.040 business plan da cui sono nati 32 brevetti, 75 spin-off e start up, 3 team sono risultati vincitori assoluti al Premio nazionale per l'innovazione a cui si aggiungono le 7 menzioni e premi speciali nazionali per l’innovazione

«Start Cup Veneto è un appuntamento ormai irrinunciabile per chi lo organizza ed è un’opportunità unica per chi vi partecipa – afferma Fabrizio Dughiero, prorettore con delega all’Innovazione e ai rapporti con le imprese dell’Università di Padova –. Start Cup Veneto è senza dubbio l’occasione per mettere alla prova il proprio spirito imprenditoriale, ma – vorrei dire – è anche molto di più: momenti preziosi di networking, contaminazione di idee e poi formazione e crescita professionale. La formazione – che viene offerta gratuitamente ai partecipanti – rappresenta un grande punto di forza di Start Cup Veneto su cui crediamo molto e che – lo constatiamo ogni anno di più – fa davvero la differenza. Il format di quest’anno ricalcherà quello della precedente edizione, ma con una novità importante: i finalisti saranno 15 e non più 10, in modo da dare la possibilità di concorrere per il premio finale a 3 team per ogni categoria (Cleantech& Energy, Culture creativity and inclusive society, ICT, Industrial e Life Sciences). Se posso permettermi un appello, in particolare ai giovani – sottolinea Dughiero – non sprecate questa grande opportunità che le università di Padova, Verona e IUAV mettono a vostra disposizione!».

Start Cup Veneto negli anni ha saputo cogliere campi innovativi emergenti dove applicare nuove idee e introdurre elementi organizzativi e professionali sempre più mirati. Anche per l’edizione di quest’anno, come nelle due precedenti, Start Cup Veneto prevede la possibilità di iscrizione per singole persone o per gruppi.

Tra le novità della ventiduesima edizione emerge un maggior numero di finalisti (15) rispetto al passato (10), sempre con un’attenzione particolare alla formazione, prevista per i 25 semifinalisti in una giornata dedicata e per i 15 finalisti attraverso il Programma di Accelerazione, un programma di formazione specifico ed intensivo con una tappa di tre giorni durante l’ultima settimana di giugno. Sono previsti sia momenti collettivi di apprendimento che incontri one-to-one e questo consentirà ai partecipanti di redigere il business plan e predisporre un video pitch, entrambi strumenti essenziali di presentazione di una business idea. I team verranno accompagnati in questo percorso fino al giorno della finale.

Sono previsti sia momenti collettivi di apprendimento che incontri one-to-one e questo consentirà ai partecipanti di redigere il business plan e predisporre un video pitch, entrambi strumenti essenziali di presentazione di una business idea. «Start Cup Veneto è un appuntamento ormai irrinunciabile per chi lo organizza ed è un’opportunità unica per chi vi partecipa – afferma Fabrizio Dughiero, prorettore con delega all’Innovazione e ai rapporti con le imprese dell’Università di Padova –. Start Cup Veneto è senza dubbio l’occasione per mettere alla prova il proprio spirito imprenditoriale, ma – vorrei dire – è anche molto di più: momenti preziosi di networking, contaminazione di idee e poi formazione e crescita professionale. La formazione – che viene offerta gratuitamente ai partecipanti – rappresenta un grande punto di forza di Start Cup Veneto su cui crediamo molto e che – lo constatiamo ogni anno di più – fa davvero la differenza. Il format di quest’anno ricalcherà quello della precedente edizione, ma con una novità importante: i finalisti saranno 15 e non più 10, in modo da dare la possibilità di concorrere per il premio finale a 3 team per ogni categoria (Cleantech& Energy, Culture creativity and inclusive society, ICT, Industrial e Life Sciences). Tra le novità della ventiduesima edizione emerge un maggior numero di finalisti (15) rispetto al passato (10), sempre con un’attenzione particolare alla formazione, prevista per i 25 semifinalisti in una giornata dedicata e per i 15 finalisti attraverso il Programma di Accelerazione, un programma di formazione specifico ed intensivo con una tappa di tre giorni durante l’ultima settimana di giugno. Sono previsti sia momenti collettivi di apprendimento che incontri one-to-one e questo consentirà ai partecipanti di redigere il business plan e predisporre un video pitch, entrambi strumenti essenziali di presentazione di una business idea. I team verranno accompagnati in questo percorso fino al giorno della finale.

Start Cup Veneto è senza dubbio l’occasione per mettere alla prova il proprio spirito imprenditoriale, ma – vorrei dire – è anche molto di più: momenti preziosi di networking, contaminazione di idee e poi formazione e crescita professionale. La formazione – che viene offerta gratuitamente ai partecipanti – rappresenta un grande punto di forza di Start Cup Veneto su cui crediamo molto e che – lo constatiamo ogni anno di più – fa davvero la differenza. Il format di quest’anno ricalcherà quello della precedente edizione, ma con una novità importante: i finalisti saranno 15 e non più 10, in modo da dare la possibilità di concorrere per il premio finale a 3 team per ogni categoria (Cleantech& Energy, Culture creativity and inclusive society, ICT, Industrial e Life Sciences). Se posso permettermi un appello, in particolare ai giovani – sottolinea Dughiero – non sprecate questa grande opportunità che le università di Padova, Verona e IUAV mettono a vostra disposizione!».

Start Cup Veneto negli anni ha saputo cogliere campi innovativi emergenti dove applicare nuove idee e introdurre elementi organizzativi e professionali sempre più mirati. Anche per l’edizione di quest’anno, come nelle due precedenti, Start Cup Veneto prevede la possibilità di iscrizione per singole persone o per gruppi.

Tra le novità della ventiduesima edizione emerge un maggior numero di finalisti (15) rispetto al passato (10), sempre con un’attenzione particolare alla formazione, prevista per i 25 semifinalisti in una giornata dedicata e per i 15 finalisti attraverso il Programma di Accelerazione, un programma di formazione specifico ed intensivo con una tappa di tre giorni durante l’ultima settimana di giugno. Sono previsti sia momenti collettivi di apprendimento che incontri one-to-one e questo consentirà ai partecipanti di redigere il business plan e predisporre un video pitch, entrambi strumenti essenziali di presentazione di una business idea. I team verranno accompagnati in questo percorso fino al giorno della finale.

Queste le categorie: Cleantech& Energy (Prodotti e/o servizi innovativi orientati al miglioramento della sostenibilità ambientale ed energetica), Culture creativity and inclusive society (prodotti e/o servizi innovativi orientati ai settori dell’economia creativa, sociale, circolare e della sostenibilità o che afferiscono agli ambiti umanistici), ICT (Prodotti e/o servizi innovativi nell’ambito delle tecnologie dell’informazione e dei nuovi media), Industrial (Prodotti e/o servizi per la produzione industriale innovativi dal punto di vista della tecnologia o del mercato) e Life Sciences (Prodotti e/o servizi innovativi volti a migliorare la salute, il benessere e la qualità di vita delle persone). Verranno assegnati, come l’anno scorso, 5 premi del valore di €2.000,00 per ciascuna categoria e 5 premi ai team vincitori assoluti di Start Cup Veneto 2023 che andranno dai €4000 agli €8000.

Il Consorzio VERDI (SARS-coV2 variants Evaluation in pRegnancy and paeDIatrics cohorts) coordinato dal Dipartimento di Salute della Donna e del Bambino (SDB) dell'Università di Padova e dalla Fondazione Penta ETS, ha ricevuto dall’Unione Europea un importante finanziamento di 5 milioni di euro per studiare l'impatto di mpox sulle popolazioni a maggior rischio di infezione o malattia grave, come le persone con HIV, le donne in gravidanza e i bambini.

Il nuovo contributo dell’Europa consentirà di sviluppare un'infrastruttura di ricerca a supporto dei piani pandemici. Grazie alla varietà di competenze scientifiche dei suoi membri, la rete di VERDI rappresenta il contesto ideale per raggiungere tali obiettivi, soprattutto per quanto riguarda le donne in gravidanza, i bambini e le persone con infezione da HIV.

«Dobbiamo essere proattivi nel nostro approccio di ricercatori, in previsione della comparsa di potenziali nuovi agenti patogeni di cui si sa poco o nulla. Il Consorzio VERDI (SARS-coV2 variants Evaluation in pRegnancy and paeDIatrics cohorts) coordinato dal Dipartimento di Salute della Donna e del Bambino (SDB) dell'Università di Padova e dalla Fondazione Penta ETS, ha ricevuto dall’Unione Europea un importante finanziamento di 5 milioni di euro per studiare l'impatto di mpox sulle popolazioni a maggior rischio di infezione o malattia grave, come le persone con HIV, le donne in gravidanza e i bambini.

Il nuovo contributo dell’Europa consentirà di sviluppare un'infrastruttura di ricerca a supporto dei piani pandemici. Grazie alla varietà di competenze scientifiche dei suoi membri, la rete di VERDI rappresenta il contesto ideale per raggiungere tali obiettivi, soprattutto per quanto riguarda le donne in gravidanza, i bambini e le persone con infezione da HIV.

«Dobbiamo essere proattivi nel nostro approccio di ricercatori, in previsione della comparsa di potenziali nuovi agenti patogeni di cui si sa poco o nulla.
