Meet Urooj

About myself

Hailing from Pakistan, I hold a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering. Currently, I am immersed in the enriching pursuit of a master's degree in Water and Geological Risk Engineering (WGRE) at UNIPD. Two years prior, I embarked on a quest to find a programme that aligns with my constant curiosity regarding the role of water and soil in our natural environment. Delightfully, my academic journey has found its way in the WGRE program. It is perfectly enriched with the topics of my interest. I firmly advocate for the equilibrium between academic endeavours and personal interests. My motto is to study and work but also travel and explore the world around you. Live every moment of your life and climb the ladder of success.

This degree programme gave me the opportunity to be selected for an Erasmus+ programme that was held in Germany on the topic of International Water Management. I am also starting my thesis internship soon with a water management company. All these opportunities came my way because I chose the right programme for me and a right institution, UNIPD, for it.

What do you like the most about the Water and Geological Risk Engineering degree programme? Is there any class/subject that stood out to you? Why would you recommend it to other students?

The Water and Geological Risk Engineering degree programme, although new at UNIPD, greatly impressed me with its excellently structured curriculum. The programme’s well-focused approach and emphasis on integrating modern software such as QGIS, HEC-HMS, and HEC-RAS into the curriculum are admirable to me. The professors are kind and are always available to students. The attractive highlight is in the numerous field trips that help us connect the lectures taught in class with their physical implications in the real world.

Why did you decide to study at UniPD?

In my quest to deepen my understanding of water and geotechnical engineering, I sought a high-quality education, and Italy emerged as a standout choice. Renowned as a global leader in engineering, Italy offers professionals and aspiring scholars optimal opportunities to thrive in a diverse environment. Moreover, the academic excellence of the University of Padua is widely acknowledged worldwide. I am thoroughly content with my decision to pursue my master's journey at UNIPD. The professors, particularly those in the WGRE program, possess extensive knowledge in their respective fields and communicate effectively in English, facilitating seamless integration for international students within the Italian education system.

What advice would you give to potential students thinking of studying at the University’s School of Engineering?

If you are on this testimonial page of UNIPD and reading my blog, I just want to say that, trust me, you are on the right platform and you are only a few steps away from embarking into a wonderful journey of being an engineering student at UNIPD. The university has well-maintained classes, high ranked researchers and is always thriving to provide its students the best hand-on experiences. I advise you apply right away and wish you good luck.

What advice would you give to potential students thinking of studying in Italy?

All the academic activities for the Water and Geological Risk Engineering programme take place at the UNIPD Rovigo branch. Rovigo is a small, peaceful city located 35-45 minutes away from Padova. I really appreciate its location because being in northern Italy puts you close to beautiful tourist destinations like Venice, Florence, and Bologna. Students are spread throughout the Veneto region, which makes it easy to connect, hang out, and immerse ourselves in Italy's vibrant culture together. My advice is not to just focus on academic work but also to enjoy life, the environment, and the delicious Italian cuisine, especially the Italian pasta.

What do you do when you’re not studying?

Whenever I have some free time, it’s my habit to go for a walk, ride a bicycle, or take one-day trips to nearby cities. Italy's rich cultural heritage has a lot to offer to international students. I prefer to get to know the locals, and work on improving my Italian language skills, as it helps in finding part-time jobs if one is interested.
