Meet Talha from Pakistan
Student of Environmental Engineering
"Participating in campus activities and student groups helped me connect with others and build a sense of belonging. I've learned to manage my time more independently, communicate across cultures, and appreciate different perspectives"
About myself
My name is Talha Saleem, and I'm a Master's student in Environmental Engineering at the University of Padua. I come from Pakistan, where I earned a Bachelor's degree in Civil Technology with Honours from the University of Lahore. My strong interest in sustainability and climate-related challenges led me to pursue advanced studies in Europe.
Before joining UniPD, I improved my academic profile through online certifications and voluntary work, particularly helping other students with their CVs and motivation letters. In 2023, I faced a scholarship rejection, but instead of giving up, I worked harder, reapplied, and was awarded the Padua Excellence Scholarship in 2024. This journey taught me the value of resilience and self-growth.
Studying at the University of Padua has been a transformative experience. The international environment, high-quality teaching, and cultural diversity have all contributed to both my academic and personal development. I've also been selected as a Tutor Buddy for Erasmus students, which allows me to support fellow international students.
As a Unibuddy Ambassador, I'm excited to guide prospective students by sharing honest insights about life and study at UniPD. I believe peer-to-peer support is essential in helping students from diverse backgrounds feel more confident in their academic journey.

With a background in Civil Technology and a strong interest in sustainability, this programme felt like a perfect fit to help me grow as an environmental professional and contribute to solving critical issues in my home country, Pakistan.
When I began researching top global universities that offer merit-based scholarships to deserving students, I discovered that the University of Padua stands out in Italy for its generous and competitive funding opportunities. The Padua Excellence Scholarship, in particular, is awarded purely on merit and academic achievement. Compared to other universities across Europe, I found that Padua is among the few that truly recognize and invest in students’ potential, regardless of nationality.
I first learned about UniPD through a European scholarship webinar, which led me to explore the university’s official website and social media platforms. I was inspired by the student testimonials, modern teaching approach, and strong support system for international students.

What advice would you give to prospective students when it comes to preparing a successful application?
My primary advice to prospective students is to start early and prepare strategically. A successful application to the University of Padua is built not only on strong academic credentials but also on how clearly and convincingly you present your motivation, achievements, and future goals.
First, carefully read the programme details and entry requirements. Tailor your application documents—especially your CV and motivation letter—to reflect how your background aligns with the chosen degree. Don’t send a generic application; personalize it to show that you truly understand and are passionate about the programme.
Second, your motivation letter is your voice. Use it to explain why you chose the University of Padua, what you hope to achieve, and how your previous academic and extracurricular experiences have prepared you. Be sincere, focused, and concise. Avoid exaggeration and instead demonstrate your interest through real examples.
Third, if you’re applying for scholarships like the Padua Excellence Scholarship, make sure your academic transcript and achievements are clearly presented. Highlight academic distinctions, research experience, or community involvement to show you are a well-rounded candidate.
Additionally, seek feedback from mentors or professors on your documents. A second pair of eyes often catches what you might miss.
Finally, prepare early for language certificates and document translations, if required. Stay organized, meet deadlines, and follow up on any unclear points by contacting the university.
The application is your first impression make it clear, honest, and reflective of your commitment.
What advice would you give to students thinking of studying in Italy? How have you adjusted to a new country?
Studying in Italy is a truly enriching experience, both academically and culturally. My advice to future students is to embrace this opportunity with an open mind and prepare to adapt, explore, and grow beyond your comfort zone.
Italy offers a unique blend of academic excellence, historical richness, and cultural diversity. The universities here, including the University of Padua, are known for their strong research foundations, international student support, and merit-based scholarships like the Excellence Scholarship which make high-quality education accessible to deserving students worldwide.
Before coming, I recommend learning some basic Italian. While most academic programmes are in English, knowing Italian greatly helps in everyday life, building friendships, and integrating into the local community. Understanding the culture and customs also makes your transition smoother.
When I first arrived, I faced challenges like navigating bureaucracy, adjusting to new teaching methods, and being away from family. However, the supportive environment at the university, the welcoming attitude of locals, and help from international offices made the adaptation easier. Participating in campus activities and student groups helped me connect with others and build a sense of belonging.
I’ve learned to manage my time more independently, communicate across cultures, and appreciate different perspectives. These experiences have not only made me academically stronger but have also contributed to my personal development.
In short, come prepared, stay curious, and embrace the journey. Italy has so much to offer—you just need to be open to receive it.
