About myself
Hi, I am Nardos Mengist from Ethiopia. I obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Management in 2021 and a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in 2022. I worked as a junior material engineer in my country fpor a year and now I am pursuing a master's degree in Management for Sustainable Firms at the University of Padua's School of Economics. The degree programme has different tracks, so I chose the Marketing and Digital Transformation study track. I love learning, travelling, playing football, and working on voluntary activities.
Why did you choose the University of Padua and the Management for Sustainable Firms degree programme?
The University of Padua and the Management for Sustainable Firms degree programme were my first choice. As my generation does, I want to invest in my future. I guess you are thinking about quality education? Oh nice! I can put myself in your shoes! Relax and let me tell you why I chose the University of Padua and the Management for Sustainable Firms degree programme.
1. Quality education is picture perfect at the University of Padua. Let’s see our idols from the recent century and the past: in the 20th century, the University of Padua produced great literary figures such as Diego Valeri and Concetto Marchesi; engineers of the stature of Giuseppe Colombo, the “master of celestial mechanics”; mathematicians such as Tullio Levi Civita; jurists like Alfredo Rocco and Livio Paladin; philosophers like Luigi Stefanini and Enrico Opocher; and doctors like Vincenzo Gallucci, who carried out the first heart transplant in Italy. Galileo Galilei, the great Pisan scientist taught at the University of Padua from 1592 to 1610, a period he would later define as the best years of his life. It was during this time that he developed the law of falling bodies, perfected the telescope and discovered four satellites of Jupiter. Elena Lucrezia Cornaro Piscopia, born in a noble Venetian family, she displayed an early appetite for study. Despite the veto imposed by the authorities on her possible pursuit of a degree in theology, on 25 June 1678 in Padua she succeeded in securing the title of Doctor in Philosophy, becoming the world’s first woman graduate. Come on, we are talking about 800 years idols we can’t finish now, but we can finish when you come here.
2. There are so many opportunities both in extra-curricular and curricular activities that help you to develop soft skills more than just going to class and the opportunity to study at partner universities.
3. A broad range of multidisciplinary courses blending practice and theory. I have a different education background and I can take my electives from different schools.
4. Management for Sustainable Firms is in demand every sector nowadays. Sustainability is not a choice; we have a responsibility to preserve and transfer a sustainable world.
What are the main features of your degree programme?
The main feature of the Management for Sustainable Firms degree programme is that it’s designed on recent trends. The functioning and competitive aspect of modern firms in the global economy or the process of companies towards sustainability, innovation and digitalization studying under smart manufacturing, marketing and digital transformation and people and organization tracks. I chose the Marketing and Digital Transformation track. The topics covered by the programme address key issues regarding the globalization of the competition and supply chains to understand and face the sustainability transition of firms, societies markets and economies.
Is there any class/subject that has stood out to you so far?
Sure! Sustainable Business Model and Organization Design and Development was a 12 credit-worth subject. The class was given by more than four professors and guest speakers; during the class we discussed some topics related to sustainable organization design and we also worked on projects with the help of professors and guests; after that, the final grade was evaluated by both. It was really a great interactive course and I wish the course had lasted more than one semester.

What do you like most about the City of Padua and why?
To begin with, there are many reasons to fall in love with the beautiful city of Padua. Living in Padua creates a feeling of having another home in a different country. I remember when I landed in Padua for the first time. It felt like a second home for me because people are welcoming and it is a student-friendly city. The geographical location also gives you the chance to travel around a lot. For me the city is the symbol of multinationalism, a hub for innovation, it is rich in architecture and arts. The city is relatively large and you’re never far away from many occasions of meeting new friends, getting to know new cultures.
What do you do when you’re not studying?
Whenever I have free time, you can find me visiting historical places like university historical places or city historical places. The Botanical Garden of the University of Padua, the Museum of Nature and Human Kind etc. are my favourite places to know more about the past and the present. I like to participate in different programmes organized by the university or others. For example, seminars, theatres, music concerts are my leisure time choices. You will also find me with my friends walking to Prato della Valle or Giardini dell’Arena and other beautiful places. Usually, I drink and taste delicious Italian food with my friends and locals. I always struggle when I have to choose a dish from pasta or pizza and fortunately the challenge is always there and choosing white wine or red wine is always driving me crazy.
During short holidays, I travel to different cities. There are different options to travel by train or bus and I can easily get tickets. There are good opportunities for me to get discounts and to travel with my friends. Each city has a miracle and I fall in love easily. Verona and Venice are good cities that are close to my beautiful Padua, and they too are rich in culture, innovation, art, and history. So, if you find me in different cities, you will be sure that I am a passionate traveller and don’t forget to say hi!
