Meet Khatima from Afghanistan

Student of the Master's degree in Cognitive Neuroscience and Clinical Neuropsychology

"I am very satisfied with the university's system since it has a flexible study plan that allows us to easily manage our time and schedule. Lunch break is one of my favourite things at the university, as there are several cafeterias called Mensa, so I usually go there with friends to have lunch, talk, and enjoy delicious traditional Italian cuisine including pasta and pizza."

Meet Khatima

About myself

Hi, this is Khatima. I am from Afghanistan and currently I am enrolled in the Master's degree in Cognitive Neuroscience and Clinical Neuropsychology at the University of Padua. Before I came to Italy, I studied general medicine in Russia. As I graduated, the terrorists Taliban took control over my country by force, and I could not return to my homeland. Thanks to the University of Padua I had the opportunity to benefit from a scholarship destinated to Afghan students, which saved me and many others in this situation.

What do you like most about the City of Padua and why?  What fun things have you experienced since being here?

During my enrollment, I experienced a different system at the university that was difficult to understand in the beginning, but the staff members were very nice and were always available to my assistance. Besides, due to some issues I came to Padua by the end of the first semester and it was difficult to go through exams. The university provided tutors that helped me with my study plan and the exam sessions. Also, it was a blessing to find three amazing international friends as we studied together, and they helped me a lot. Later, it didn’t take me long to make more friends including Italians. I am very satisfied with the university’s system since it has a flexible study plan that allows us to easily manage our time and schedule. Since UniPD is one of the 100 top universities in the world, the university attracts a large number of international students, and I am also pleased that we have international experienced professors from English speaking nations as well as Italian professors who have studied and worked overseas. Lunch break is one of my favourite things at the university, as there are several cafeterias called Mensa, so I usually go there with friends to have lunch, talk, and enjoy delicious traditional Italian cuisine including pasta and pizza.

In addition, the university has several libraries that are easily accessible, as well as good study spaces for individuals and groups. The libraries are usually crowded with students, which motivates me to study more. Later in the evening, Padova nights are vibrant and exciting, making it a pleasant place to spend time with friends and have fun. Prato, Portello, and Signora are the most exciting places that I have ever experienced in my life with my international friends. By the way, Prato della Valle in Padua is the largest square in Italy and one of largest in Europe.

What fun things have you experienced since being here?

Regardless of the university, I love Italy because it is a beautiful country with wonderful and friendly people. It is likely that everyone has heard about the beauty of Italy and has dreamed of visiting this country like I did. Also, Padova is a peaceful city which is only half an hour away by train from the famous, dreamy city Venice. Despite my studies, I was able to visit the nearby cities with my friends. Venice, a beautiful floating city on the river, Verona where I saw the Juliet house, and Bologna, a city with a lot of history. Obviously, I would not stop here and will visit Florence, Milan, Rome, and Cinque Terre as soon as I have the time. I speak a little bit of Italian now. Although I speak several languages, Italian is the language I most wish to be fluent at. It is the language of love, and my favourite word is Amore.

    My Unipd experience: Lab activities

During the first year I could take two labs which are forensic neuroscience and noninvasive brain stimulation. The good thing about the labs were that we were divided into small groups of 10-15 students, and I personally had the chance to take part as a participant and be the expertise in the lab. Since I studied medicine, I had a forensics course where we examined the deceased bodies, and I assumed that the forensic lab in the clinical neuropsychology laboratory would be the same, but it was a different and interesting experience. As part of this laboratory, we studied real cases and discussed the role of an expert forensic neuropsychologist in courts.
