Meet Ana Sofia

About myself

I am currently a second-year student in the Physics of Data master’s programme. I completed my bachelor’s degree in Physics at the Universidad de Sonora, where I realized that I wanted to continue with a master’s degree focused on computational physics. This led me to discover the Physics of Data programme at the University of Padua, which has provided me with strong technical tools and helped me develop new professional interests.
As I really enjoy spending time with my friends, the idea of studying abroad initially made me a bit sad about leaving my city. However, Padua has gradually started to feel like a second home. I have made many friends, both international and Italian, and being surrounded by people who are going through similar experiences has made the transition much easier and very rewarding.

Why did you choose the University of Padua and our degree programme in Physics of Data? How did you learn about our institution?

When I was close to graduating, I decided to do a master's programme related to machine learning and physics. After searching programmes I found the master of Physics of Data in the University of Padua. I really get caught by its programme and the opportunities that they offer, especially the possibility of an internship.
At first, I did not know about this city and the University, but after searching and learning more about the amazing history behind it, I became very impressed. Its more than 800 years of legacy, the fact that scientific figures such as Galileo Galilei studied and taught here and the concept of “UniverCity” made me more interested in the University and the city.
Since both the programme and the environment align well with my professional goals and personal lifestyle, I decided to pursue my master’s degree here.

What are the main features of your degree programme?

One of the principal features of my master course is that we work on different projects in a wide range of fields. Additionally, the Physics of Data program has a very flexible study programme that can align to any kind of interests, from fundamental physics to industrial applications. This is one of the main reasons why I like the programme as it allowed me to explore different areas before deciding which field I wanted to pursue in depth, helping me make a clear and informed choice.

Is there any class/subject that has stood out to you?

Before starting the programme, my interests were mainly oriented toward quantum physics, especially quantum information with atoms and photons and quantum hardware. Along the way, I took a course on the physics of complex networks, which strongly captured my interest and helped me discover a field I had never expected to be so closely aligned with my strengths.

What advice would you give to prospective students when it comes to preparing a successful application?

My first advice is to express all your feelings and expectations about the master and what are your goals after completing the programme on the motivational letter. I think that it is very important to express why you liked the programme, how it aligns with your interest and what you can provide after finishing the programme.
Another piece of advice is to prepare your documents in advance and check that you fulfil all the requirements, in case of any doubts or questions, the University International Desk are always happy to help.

What advice would you give to students thinking of studying in Italy?

Italy is a country full of culture and tradition, with beautiful landscapes and amazing food. It also offers many opportunities to travel around the country at relatively low cost, which makes the experience even richer. I think it is very important to learn about the culture and the city before moving abroad, so you can better understand your new environment and appreciate its history and emblematic places.
I can confidently say that my time in Italy has been wonderful. I have met people from all over the world, improved my English, learned more Italian, and even picked up a bit of other languages. At the same time, being abroad has helped me reconnect with my own culture, especially by realizing how much I value the small everyday things from home.
My advice is simple: if you are truly interested in a programme and you feel attracted to the lifestyle of the city, don’t hesitate. Studying abroad is a unique opportunity that gives you lifelong experiences, not only professionally, but also personally, because you grow by engaging with a different culture and way of life.

What do you like to do when you are not studying? How do you like to spend your free time?

In my free time I really enjoy walking in the city and discovering new buildings and learning more about its history. Exploring different streets and historical spots has become one of my favourite ways to relax. On my Sundays, I usually like to go to Prato de la Valle or to the centre of the city, then go for a gelato and finish going and drink a spritz in the afternoon. I also love to hang out with my friends around the city.
Another aspect that I love about this city is that it is bicycle and walking friendly so you can move anywhere without worrying about transportation. Public transport is also efficient, but I usually prefer getting around on my own by walking or biking.
And of course if I have time and the opportunity, I like to go to gite around Padua or in the Veneto region.
