The University of Padua will award an honorary degree in European and American Languages and Literatures to the singer-songwriter, author, and artist Patti Smith.
The ceremony will be held on the afternoon of Thursday, November 28 in the Aula Magna of Palazzo Bo (participation by invitation).
The University of Padua’s Department of Linguistic and Literary Studies corroborates the awarding of this title, stating, "For Patti, words are dialogue between art and society, suspended between a religious whisper and a desperate scream. From her early beginnings as an author of spoken word and punk rock, Smith has always experimented with alternative rock; Patti Smith explores the expressive virtue of words in all their forms:reciting, singing, screaming, spitting, dreaming, whispering.We find inspiration in her words through great European and American literature, stretched between modernity and contemporaneity. "
Patti Smith has enjoyed a long career, born Patricia Lee Smith in Chicago on December 30, 1946.
A glimpse of Patti Smith’s artistic career: first album produced by John Cale, Horses 1975, Radio Ethiopia 1976, Easter 1978, and Wave 1979. The album, Wave, consecrated her as the leading exponent of a new and intelligent rock (Because the night, written with Bruce Springsteen, is included in the album, Easter).
The ceremony is preceded by a concert and reading by Smith on Wednesday, November 27 at 21:00 in the Sala dei Giganti of Palazzo Liviano. The "Words and Music" tour is an exclusive event dedicated to the academic community. Participation in the concert is by invitation only.
