Valued at 4,714,646.40 euros, the 21 UniPd projects awarded within the Horizon Europe - Action Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowships 2023 will be carried out by researchers at the University of Padua. Of these, 10 are European Fellowships (for researchers within Europe), and 11 are Global Fellowships (they involve a period of 1 to 2 years at an institution located outside Italy with an expected 1 year return to Italy scheme). Furthermore, another 6 projects are on the reserve list and could be financed later.

Comments from Vice-rector of Research at the University of Padua, Fabio Zwirner “We have witnessed excellent results again this year thanks to a trend seen in previous MSCA PF calls that rewards research development initiatives by the University. For projects that were judged to be of high quality by the European Commission but were unable to receive funding due to budgetary constraints, UniPd will promote the MSCA Seal of Excellence@Unipd call. As the seventh year since its initiations, the MSCA Seal of Excellence@Unipd call will allow researchers to carry out their projects at our university.”

In addition to the 21 funded projects, another 29 projects obtained a score ≥ 85/100 were awarded the MSCA Seal of Excellence.  While such projects are not funded by Horizon Europe due to budgetary constraints, they do receive support in securing alternative funding from national or regional authorities. In this case, the University of Padua offers funding thanks to the MSCA Seal of Excellence @ UNIPD initiative. As a first of its kind in Italy, the initiative awards a grant of 50,000 euros per year, through a dedicated call for applications, to projects that designate the University of Padua as the host institution. The initiative aims to encourage wider participation by the most qualified international researchers in the Marie-Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship Calls under Horizon Europe.

The Marie Sklodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowships actions supports research training and career development of researchers by across international, intersectoral and interdisciplinary mobility. They are part of Horizon Europe 2021-2027, the most ambitious framework program of the European Commission for funding European research and innovation, intended for research projects or actions aimed at scientific and technological innovation that bring a significant impact on the lives of European citizens.

The Postdoctoral Fellowships (MSCA-PF) lasts between 12 and 36 months and finances the transnational mobility of promising researchers.

Since 2014, a total of 132 post-doc researchers have won funding under the Marie Skłodowska Curie Action by choosing the University of Padua for their research projects. A community of young talents that is enriched year by year and confirms the attractiveness of the University of Padua as a cutting-edge institution in the various sectors of scientific research.

Researchers from the Departments of Biomedical Sciences and Pharmacological Sciences of the University of Padua have published a study entitled “A SPLICS reporter reveals α-synuclein regulation of lysosome-mitochondria contacts which affects TFEB nuclear translocation in Nature Communication. Knowing that defects in mitochondria and lysosome represent a common hallmark of neurodegenerative diseases, targeting their communication could open therapeutic avenues. The study unveils a new methodology that observes how communication occurs between mitochondria and lysosome and how the protein alpha-synuclein, involved in the onset of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease, interferes with this communication leading to the death of neuronal cells.

Among cellular organelles, mitochondria and lysosomes are the yin and yang of energy and metabolic control, their communication is critical for cellular survival. Defects in their exchange of information contribute to the development of pathologies.

Prof. Tito Calì of the Department of Biomedical Sciences of the University of Padua explains, “The methodology we developed have proven indispensable for understanding the language through which different cellular compartments exchange information. Being able to decipher this language will not only shed light on the molecular mechanisms underlying cellular functioning, but understanding when, how, and why they fail in different pathological conditions will shed a light on the Achilles' heel of a specific disease by opening a path to the development of new targeted drugs.

Prof. Marisa Brini of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences of the University of Padua explains, “Specifically, the study allows us to identify alpha synuclein by modifying the distances between the mitochondria of the cells and the lysosomes, the cellular incinerators, regulates the transfer of signals, and calcium ions, which are essential for the well-being of our cells. The loss of this function, due to the uncontrolled accumulation of alpha-synuclein in the central nervous system, results in a weakening of the protective mechanisms that our cells possess to eliminate non-functioning proteins/organelles, with consequent cellular damage and the development of diseases neurodegenerative.”

The availability of a tools that allow for the understanding of the finer molecular mechanisms underlying intracellular communication opens to the identification of new pharmacological target.
