The new Research Center for Agriculture, Sustainability and Food – C.A.S.A. was inaugurated in Legnaro, on Via dell’Ospedale Veterinario. The center is named after Maurizio Borin (1956–2025), Professor of Agronomy at the Department of Agronomy, Animals, Food, Natural Resources and Environment (DAFNAE) of the University of Padua, who recently passed away.
This initiative aims to honor his extraordinary commitment not only to teaching and research but also for his decisive contribution to the creation and development of the Department, which he led for two terms.
In 2011, he outlined the strategic and organizational foundations of the new departmental structure, adopting a broad, modern, and inclusive vision that enabled the Department to successfully achieve its objectives. In 2017, with passion and dedication, he led the Department’s participation in the MUR call for Departments of Excellence, preparing the proposal that led to the creation of the research center.
DAFNAE is recognized as a Department of Excellence and has received funding from MIUR exceeding 8.5 million euros for the C.A.S.A. project (2018–2022), aimed at strengthening and enhancing research quality through investments in human resources, equipment, infrastructure, and high-level educational initiatives.
“A key figure in numerous successful academic initiatives, Maurizio Borin also contributed with great passion and vision to research and the protection of the environment, leaving an indelible mark on colleagues and students, with an impact that reaches far beyond university walls,” added Gianni Barcaccia, Director of DAFNAE.
It was Maurizio Borin who proposed the transformation of a disused rural building, known as the former Casa Marini, into a modern center for research and innovation. This center is intended to host the Department’s main research and service activities and to enhance technology transfer throughout the Veneto region. The goal of the project is to integrate various activities into a single laboratory facility, fostering the sharing of key topics among different research groups. Among these, the development of scientific research and technology transfer activities in the fields of agriculture, food, and environmental sustainability stand out, approached with multidisciplinary perspectives and innovative methodologies.

But above all, the opening ceremony gave us the opportunity to remember Professor Maurizio Borin, to whom the center is dedicated and who recently passed away. Maurizio deeply believed in and worked tirelessly for the realization of this new research center. His strong institutional spirit, his excellence as a researcher and teacher, his ability to bring a smile in any circumstance, and his role as a treasured mentor to many students will be remembered by everyone who steps into the Agripolis campus,” commented Antonio Parbonetti, Deputy Rector.
