Preparing your child for life abroad: what to expect
Moving to a new country is an exciting adventure, but it also comes with challenges. A different culture, unfamiliar surroundings, and being thousands of miles away from home can be overwhelming. Helping your young person prepare in advance can make all the difference in how smoothly they adjust to their new environment.
Start early
The University of Padua only has one intake per year and knowing the programme your young person wishes to apply to is key.
Make sure you start your research and acquire all relevant information early. This will reduce anxiety and result in a smooth and easy application process.
Prepare thoroughly
Preparation is key when it comes to choosing a university and applying for a specific degree programme. Our application platform is a very useful resource to know our educational offer; just enter the name of the programme you are looking for and open the dedicated page. Also, make sure to carefully read the entry requirements to ensure that your young person can play their cards right and increase their chances of being admitted.
Knowing what documentation is needed is paramount; here you can find the list of documents that you will need to present.
Our orientation webinars are a very useful tool to better get to know our University and our educational offer. The full schedule is available here.
If you happen to come to- Padua, why not visit our campus? Tours are organized by our International Desk and can be booked here.
Make a statement
A personal statement or motivation letter is required to apply to nearly all of our programmes. Help your young person clearly state why they are seeking admission to that specific course and highlight why their skills and knowledge make them suitable. A well-crafted statement will help your young person stand out among other candidates.
Cultural Adaptation
Encourage your young one to research the local customs, social norms, and lifestyle of the host country. Understanding cultural differences will help them navigate social situations with confidence and respect.
Language Skills
While fluency in Italian is not required, learning basic phrases can significantly boost your child’s confidence and ease day-to-day interactions. Even simple efforts can go a long way in making connections and settling in. The university provides free online resources prior to arrival and Italian language courses are available for newcomers in the first semester, you may just want to integrate this with some extra preparation (learning apps, dedicated podcasts...)
Academic Adjustment
The educational approach may differ from what your young person is used to. Instead of relying on rote memorization, many universities abroad emphasize critical thinking and deep understanding. Preparing for this shift can help them succeed academically. Onboarding activities are also planned for students to learn how to navigate the Italian Education System!
Summer Schools
The Summer Schools organized by the University of Padua are a great opportunity for prospective students to approach our Institution. They will be able to learn more in depth about the subjects they are interested in, to get a closer look at how classes and academic life are and to better get to know the Italian language and culture. Information on courses available and calls for application is available here.
Financial Responsibility
Help your child set up a dedicated bank account and teach them how to budget effectively. Understanding how to manage money, track expenses, and prioritize spending is essential for independent living.
Practical Life Skills
Make sure your child knows how to handle everyday tasks like cooking a few simple meals, doing laundry, and keeping their space clean. These skills may seem basic, but they make a big difference in fostering independence and reducing stress.
Visa and Health Insurance
Acquiring information on the visa request process well in advance will ensure you and your young person to be prepared when the moment comes.
Having health insurance is mandatory when requesting a visa. You can take it out while at home, but your young person will also be able to register to the Italian national health insurance system once they arrive in Padua. And enjoy several benefits.
Emotional Well-Being
Perhaps the most important aspect of preparation is emotional support. Living abroad can be a rollercoaster — your young one may feel excitement one moment and homesickness the next. Reassure them that it is normal to feel this way. As a parent or supporter, your consistent love, encouragement, and guidance will be their emotional anchor. In addition, the University of Padua commits to providing its students with professional, all-around psychological support. If need be, your child will be in safe hands.
