Onelia Gagliano is an Assistant Professor and Young PI at the Department of Industrial Engineering of the University of Padova. She obtained in 2011 the degree in Bioengineering and in 2015 a PhD in Industrial Engineering, both at the University of Padua, with a period spent abroad at the UT Southwestern University (Dallas, USA).
During her research she has been involved in developing cutting-edge technologies (microfluidics, hydrogels, multi-omics) to improve the performance of many biological processes, making important scientific contributions in the field generation of human stem cells and the production of human human cells, such as neurons, taking into account the importance of the microenvironment.
In 2019 she won STARS Starting Grant from the University of Padua for the development of a lab-on-chip model of human neurons for neurodegenerative disease studies.
In 2023 che won an ERC Starting Grant (2023-2028), to develop a human neural tube model capable of reproducing all phases of neural morphogenesis starting from the earliest stages, with a precise analysis of the structural constraints present in the human body.
The main interest of her research is the development of innovative microtechnologies in order to overcome the limitations of existing biological models, integrating elements of engineering and basic biology.
