Meet Vanja from Serbia
Student of Environmental Sustainability and Education
"The thing I have enjoyed the most so far has to be learning about already familiar topics, but from completely new and different perspectives"
About myself
Hello, hi! My name is Vanja and I was born and raised in the capital city of Serbia, Belgrade. From an early age, I have shared an interest in biology, so pursuing academic studies in this field has always been a no-brainer for me. After obtaining a bachelor's degree in general biology from my hometown university, I decided to focus on environmentalism and nature preservation, thus I enrolled in the UniPD's Master's degree programme in Environmental Sustainability and Education. Besides biology, I also share interests in pop and queer culture, travelling, reading and occasional night outs.
Why did you choose the University of Padua and the Environmental Sustainability degree programme? Why would you recommend it to other students?
The reason why I chose the programme mainly stems from its curriculum, which matches my interest in environmental sustainability. Moreover, while some of the programme’s courses align with my previous degree, and thus are inside the scope of what I am familiar with, other provide a more interdisciplinary approach, branching out to other adjacent fields, which is something that I find particularly interesting and valuable. With that being said, I would definitely recommend my programme to all those who share the ambition to pursue a career in this field.
What are the main features of your degree programme?
The programme that I have chosen, which is Environmental Sustainability, initially provides you with fundamental theoretical knowledge on the topic of ecology and environmentalism. The curriculum also includes several interdisciplinary courses that are not necessarily biology-related, but that give you perspectives on this subject from other fields. Finally, in the second half of the programme, courses focus mainly on establishing elementary practical skills that are necessary for pursuing a career in this area of science. It is also worth noting that our programme includes the other ‘path’, which is in Italian and is aimed at the study of the environment and sustainability for educational purposes.
What have you enjoyed most about your programme so far?
The thing I have enjoyed the most so far has to be learning about already familiar topics, but from completely new and different perspectives. Also, the field activities, which are common in our courses, have been a great experience, not only for developing skills for scientific research, but also for socializing with other students.
What advice would you give to potential students thinking of studying in Italy
When it comes to the biocritical things, I would like to suggest to my fellow-non-EU students to be patient and to try to get experience from other students. In addition, for foreign students in general, I would propose to start looking for a place in Padua as early as April or May, since the student housing market here is really competitive.
What do you like most about the City of Padua and why?
Padua is a small city that, nonetheless, provides a lot of the big city amenities, so it kind of represents ‘the best of both worlds’. Furthermore, the city’s student-oriented atmosphere makes it easy to navigate your new life as a foreign student and to meet new people. Finally, its rich history and cultural importance really make you feel privileged to call this place your home.
What do you do when you’re not studying?
When I’m not studying, I usually like to take a stroll in the city’s centre, grab a drink and catch-up with my new friends. Additionally, because of its geographic position, Padua is suitable for making day trips, which is also something I enjoy exploiting.
