Meet Mats

About myself

My name is Mats, and I'm from Germany. I'm currently in my first year of the Master's programme in Management for Sustainable Firms at the University of Padova. During my Bachelor's in Philosophy and Economics in Germany, I had the chance to spend an exchange semester in Japan. This experience sparked my love for meeting new people, exploring different cultures, and discovering new opportunities. It also inspired me to apply to the University of Padova.
Beyond my academic pursuits, I'm quite social and actively engaged in various group activities, such as football, hiking, student events, or simply enjoying an aperitivo with friends at one of the many bars in Padova.
I'm grateful for my experience in Italy so far. Not only am I satisfied with the university, but I also appreciate its location, which makes it easy to travel throughout Italy and experience the many facets of Italian culture, especially the amazing food.
Studying in a country where you weren't born and raised can be challenging, but I try to make the most of every experience, whether it's big or small, viewing them as opportunities to learn and enjoying the journey as much as the destination.

Why did you choose the University of Padua and the Management for Sustainable Firms degree programme?

I can't point to a single reason why I chose the University of Padova; it was a combination of factors. While on an exchange programme in Japan, where I was studying economics and sustainable cultures, I met some incredible people from the Veneto region. I also wanted to gain more experience abroad, so I started looking into universities in Italy. That's when I found a new degree programme at Padova that seemed perfect, offering an innovative approach to combining sustainability and management. Initially, I was skeptical about studying in Italy, as I'd only visited for holidays. However, the university's high reputation, the innovative structure of the programme, and my friends' glowing descriptions of Padova as an amazing city for students ultimately convinced me to apply.

What are the main features of your degree programme?

In my opinion, one of the key features of the programme is its straightforward structure. It's a completely new programme, which allows professors to offer up-to-date classes that cover best practices for relevant topics.
As with any new programme, there are some ups and downs, but so far, it's been a great experience for me.
Additionally, our programme lets you choose from three tracks, allowing you to specialize in the area you find most interesting. This flexibility enables you to focus on the field that aligns with your career goals. I personally chose the marketing and digitalization track, which matches my interests. Last but certainly not least, our programme and department offer a variety of opportunities for international experiences. You can participate in double degree programmes, undertake international internships, or go on exchange semesters in exciting locations.

What advice would you give to potential students thinking of studying at the University of Padua’s School of Economics?

In my opinion, the best way to have a successful (and fun) experience at the University of Padova is to participate in as many activities as possible. Fortunately, both Padova and the Department offer plenty of opportunities to do just that.
From an academic perspective, the university provides various ways to engage, including buddy programmes, social events, and other networking activities. For example, the ESN Network connects international students, creating a fantastic environment for socializing. The programme also fosters interaction with classmates, while the city itself has a vibrant community where you can meet thousands of people, especially other students. This rich social scene helps you find your group and have an amazing experience in Padova. It includes plenty of good food, sports, and partying, but also, of course, studying—which can be enjoyable with the right people.
Additionally, having a bike is a great idea—it makes getting around Padova much easier

What do you like most about the City of Padua and why?

What I like most about the city is its vibrant student community and the beautiful nature nearby. It's easy to socialize in Padova because there are frequent events and activities happening all over the city.
Padova has plenty of great places for coffee, aperitivi, study sessions, and more. The sunny weather in Italy adds to the overall charm, making everyday life feel brighter.
Another great aspect of Padova is the variety of things to do just outside the city. Both the Dolomites and the sea are less than two hours away, offering fantastic opportunities for weekend trips and outdoor activities.

What do you do when you’re not studying?

When I'm not studying, I enjoy a variety of activities. As I mentioned earlier, I love spending time in nature. This, along with my passion for exploring new places, leads me to take short trips across Italy to visit new towns and experience different landscapes.
I also enjoy playing football with friends, trying new Italian dishes, and spending time outdoors—whether it's hiking in the nearby hills, cycling around the city, or having a picnic in the park. Additionally, I like attending events such as ground hopping at one of Italy's many stadiums, as well as concerts and festivals. But also sometimes, I prefer to cook at home and spend a day reading or watching documentaries.
These activities help me make the most of my time in Italy and truly enjoy my studies here.
