Meet Macy

About myself

My name is Macy Janine Pamaranglas, and I am from the Philippines. Growing up in Lebanon, I completed my undergraduate studies in Political Science & International Affairs with a minor in Multimedia Journalism, graduating in 2021. Soon after, I made the move to Padua to pursue a Master's in Human Rights and Multi-Level Governance at UNIPD, a decision I consider the best I've ever made.

Being raised as an only child and heavily dependent on my parents, adapting to a new country presented challenges, but it was undeniably rewarding. The experience granted me independence, allowing me to forge my path and establish lifelong friendships. Currently, I reside in Rome, and I work for the European Public Law Organization.

Undoubtedly, the diverse experiences in Padua have played a significant role in shaping the person I am today.

Why did you choose the University of Padua and the Human Rights and Multi-Level Governance degree programme?

Embracing the Italian culture of work-life balance was crucial for me, transitioning from a fast-paced work culture. Choosing the Human Rights degree programme, exclusive to UNIPD, allowed me to engage with a diverse group of international students. This dynamic mix enhanced my understanding of how human rights play out, or don't, in different corners of the world.

What are the main features of your degree programme?

The MA in Human Rights and Multi-Level Governance at the University of Padua aligns with global initiatives to promote a universal culture of human rights. It offers a practical, seminar-based curriculum in English, emphasizing multi-level governance, human rights law, and key concepts such as “human development” and “human security.” As a graduate of the programme, I believe that graduates are prepared for various roles, including human rights officers in international organizations, diplomatic services, and public sectors.

Is there any class or subject that stood out to you?

The 'History of Genocides' course was engaging, especially when I presented on Martial Law in the Philippines under Ferdinand Marcos Sr. This topic was crucial due to the human rights violations during his rule. Connecting it to the concept of genocide added an interesting perspective, highlighting global issues. Exploring my country's history in class was both challenging and rewarding, emphasizing the importance of critically examining historical events. This experience deepened my understanding of political power, human rights, and the ongoing impact of history on our present and future.

Why did you decide to study in Padua and how have you found the experience so far?

Italy's beauty and culture fascinated me, and Padua, being a small and cozy city, was my perfect choice to study. Interacting with international students enriched my understanding of various cultures. What made it even more special was finding a Filipino community in Padua, who have become like family to me.

Have you found it easy to meet new people since you started university?

I connected with friends even before arriving in Padua through a Filipino students' group chat at UNIPD. This made adjusting to the city much easier. Meeting new people in a foreign country required stepping out of my comfort zone, but I realized every international student faced similar challenges. Pushing myself to be courageous in those moments has shaped the person I am today, and I'm grateful for that.

What do you do when you’re not studying?

On weekends, I loved hanging out with friends in the city center. We would grab aperitivo or gelato, chat for hours, and unwind by strolling around Prato della Valle or Giardini dell’Arena. It was the perfect break from studying, enjoying fresh air, and making great memories.
