Meet Archana

About myself

Greetings! I proudly introduce myself as Archana Singh, a student hailing from the inaugural cohort of the Master's program in Food and Health, which commenced in 2021. My academic journey began with a Bachelor's degree in Food Technology, equipping me with a solid foundation in this fascinating field.

Passionate about driving positive change and contributing to the well-being of marginalized communities, I had the privilege of serving as a Rural Development Fellow under the esteemed M.S. Swaminathan Foundation. This invaluable experience allowed me to work tirelessly on initiatives focused on food security and the sustainable generation of livelihoods for vulnerable tribes. The insights gained from this remarkable journey have propelled me towards joining this innovative Master's program, enabling me to channel my efforts towards ensuring food security and sustainability for all.

Why did you decide to study in Padua and how have you found the experience so far?

The first reason I decided to study at the University of Padova was its legacy of research excellence which I searched on google. Also, I read some of the research articles published by my department professor that showed the quality of research conducted by the professor. Also, The City of Padova is full of vibes and history that was explored through Youtube videos. I came to know the cheap living expenses which was icing on the cake. The most attractive was the degree programme’s course structure and MAECI scholarship.
Allora!!! The experience in any place is totally dependent on how you perceive and accept both the good and bad moments of life. I was lucky to find a house every time before arriving at Padova (maybe I cracked the code on how to get accommodation through facebook). Padova is close to mountains, sea, and history. What else one needs to have good weekends. Night life of Padova is wonderful and also the city is close to other big cities of Italy. Trust me being Indian I used to think we Indians are most hospitable but No! Come to Italy! You will find be it your professor, students, roommates, or Café…you will love them! There is a lot more than just academics if you try to explore in Padova. So, make yourself ready to step out of your comfort zone and sing “Bella Ciao” with everyone!

What are some fun activities you did during breaks or holidays? How do you spend your free time?

During breaks and vacations, my heart beat to the rhythm of adventure. I love to go on exciting walks with my valued friends and family, creating vivid memories of Europe's gorgeous landscapes and my beloved India, where I travelled extensively since my high school days. In the middle of laughing and friendship, unexpected dance parties brightened the hostel life, filling it with sheer delight. Cards became triggers for passionate competitions in games like Scopa, tying us together even more. Scuba diving immersed me in the fascinating world under the waves over the course of a summer. I flew through the sky while paragliding and conquered untamed rivers in exhilarating water rafting adventures while guided by professionals. Skydiving still calls into my fantasies. Cycling to secluded havens becomes my escape while savouring the diverse tapestry of vegetarian cuisines nourishes my soul.

What are some things people might not know about studying in Italy?

Studying in Italy holds hidden treasures that often go unnoticed. As a graduate, one is bestowed with the esteemed title of "dottore" symbolizing academic accomplishment. Beyond the textbooks, life in Italy becomes dolce, where the pursuit of knowledge intertwines effortlessly with the joys of life. Scholarships not only cover tuition fees but also provide a generous stipend, akin to a salaried professional, eliminating the need for burdensome education loans. Research opportunities flourish through collaborations with renowned universities, surpassing the limitations of Erasmus exchanges. The vibrant coffee culture fuels intellectual conversations while indulging in fresh cheese from local farms adds a touch of authenticity. Excursions to vineyards reveal the secrets of Italy's splendid wines. Professors, known for their warmth, foster an atmosphere of support, encouraging students' research aspirations. The gratitude culture is woven into daily life, with greetings of "ciao" exchanged warmly, and the day ends with a fond "ciao ciao". And on Saturdays, Italians engage in lively talks, while Sundays see piazzas come alive with music, inviting late-night gatherings.

How to prepare for an international experience?

I recommend the following steps to prepare for your own international adventure:
1. Research: Immerse yourself in the destination's culture, customs, and local norms. Learn basic phrases of the local language to enhance your interactions.
2. Plan finances: Create a comprehensive budget, factoring in expenses for travel, accommodation, food, and insurance. Explore scholarships or grants that can support your trip.
3. Health and safety: Prioritize your well-being by checking travel advisories, obtaining necessary vaccinations, and securing travel insurance. Keep copies of important documents in case of emergencies.
4. Connect with locals: Engage with online communities or social media groups specific to your destination. Seek advice and insights from locals, who can offer valuable tips and recommendations. Don’t try to find a group of your country otherwise you will never get that international feel
5. Pack wisely: Consider the climate and local attire while packing. Don't forget essentials like adapters, chargers, and a universal language dictionary. Be prepared to adapt and be comfortable.
6. Embrace cultural differences: Approach your international experience with an open mind and respect for local customs. Embrace the opportunity to learn from diverse perspectives and broaden your worldview.
7. Prepare for challenges: International experiences can be unpredictable. Stay flexible, patient, and resilient. Embrace the unexpected as an opportunity for personal growth and learning.
8. Document your journey: Capture the essence of your experiences through photos, journals, or videos. Reflecting on your adventures will enrich your memories and provide a lasting record of your growth.
9. Emphasize the value of college life: make the most of your time as a student. Connect with peers, have lunch, go for coffee, and enjoy activities like cycling together. Travel extensively, try different cuisines, and explore museums, historical sites, and clubs. This phase of life is unique, and once you enter the job world, you may not have as much free time. Cherish the freedom and opportunities that college life offers.
Remember, an international experience is not only about academic growth but also about personal development and creating lifelong connections. Embrace the adventure with an open heart, a sense of curiosity, and a willingness to embrace new possibilities.
