397 early-career researchers won European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grants. Following the first call for proposals under the EU’s new R&I programme, Horizon Europe, €619 million will be invested in excellent projects dreamed up by scientists and scholars. Grants worth on average €1.5 million will help ambitious younger researchers launch their own projects, form their teams and pursue their best ideas. The selected proposals cover all disciplines of research, from the medical applications of artificial intelligence, to the science of controlling matter by using light, to designing a legal regime for fair influencer marketing. Female researchers won some 43% of grants, an increase from 37% in 2020 and the highest share to date. 

The laureates of this grant competition proposed to carry out their projects at universities and research centres in 22 EU and associated countries, mostly in Germany (72 projects), France (53), the UK (46) and the Netherlands (44). There are nationals of 45 countries among the winners of this call, notably Germans (67 researchers), Italians (58), French (44) and Dutch (27). Thirteen researchers who were previously based in the US will move to Europe as a result of this funding. This call for proposals attracted over 4,000 proposals, which were reviewed by panels of renowned researchers from around the world. The grants will create more than 2,000 jobs for postdoctoral fellows, PhD students, and other staff at the host institutions.

Four researchers, awarded with the prestigious European Research Council (ERC) 2021 Starting Grant supported by the European Commission within the framework of Horizon Europe, have chosen the University of Padua as their Host Institution, placing it at the first place in Italy for number of funded grants.  

Since the start of the ERC Funding in 2007, the University of Padua has obtained funding for about 50 research projects. Researchers from the University are represented and have been awarded funding in all three ERC domains: Physical Sciences and Engineering, Life Sciences, and Social Sciences and Humanities. The new four Starting grant PIs, working in the areas of Physical Sciences and Engineering and Social Sciences and Humanities are: Luca Dell'Amico (researcher at the Department of Chemical Sciences) with the project entitled Synthetic Bimodal Photoredox Catalysis: Unlocking New Sustainable Light-Driven Reactivity; Ludovica Galeazzo (I Tatti, the Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies), hosted at the Department of Cultural Heritage: Archaeology and History of Art, Cinema and Music) with the project Venice's Nissology. Reframing the Lagoon City as an Archipelago: A Model for Spatial and Temporal Urban Analysis (16th-21st centuries); Martha Giovanna Pamato (researcher and MSCA Fellow at the Department of Geosciences) with the project Diamonds as the key to unravel the origin of Earth's water; Silvia Benavides-Varela (researcher at the Department of Developmental Psychology and Socialisation and winner of a STARS@UNIPD grant in 2019) with the project Infant verbal Memory IN Development: a window for understanding language constraints and brain plasticity from birth.

Among Italian universities, the University of Padua ranks first in terms of funding provided.

Sono quattro in totale le ricercatrici e i ricercatori che hanno vinto il prestigioso European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grants e hanno scelto l'Ateneo di Padova come propria Host Institution che si conferma l'Ateneo in Italia con il maggior numero di finanziamenti ottenuti nell'ambito del programma a sostegno della ricerca. Per un totale di 28 grants in Host Institutions italiane, il nostro Paese si colloca al quinto posto in Europa.

In totale dalla nascita di ERC nel 2007 l’Università di Padova ha ottenuto a oggi il finanziamento di ben 50 progetti di ricerca. Tre gli ambiti di finanziamento degli ERC: Physical Sciences and Engineering, Life Sciences, e Social Sciences and Humanities, tutti e tre rappresentati dai ricercatori dell’Università di Padova che si sono aggiudicati il finanziamento. Si tratta di Luca Dell'Amico (ricercatore presso il Dipartimento di Scienze chimiche e ospitato presso Dipartimento di Scienze chimiche) con il progetto dal titolo Synthetic Bimodal Photoredox Catalysis: Unlocking New Sustainable Light-Driven Reactivity, Ludovica Galeazzo " (I Tatti, the Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies e ospitata presso il Dipartimento dei Beni Culturali: archeologia, storia dell’arte, del cinema e della musica) con il progettoVenice's Nissology. Reframing the Lagoon City as an Archipelago: A Model for Spatial and Temporal Urban Analysis (16th-21st centuries),Martha Giovanna Pamato> (assegnista di ricerca presso il Dipartimento di Geoscienze, già Msca Fellow di Unipd e ospitata presso il Dipartimento dei Geoscienze) con il progetto Diamonds as the key to unravel the origin of Earth's water e Silvia Benavides-Varela (ricercatrice presso il Dipartimento di Psicologia dello sviluppo e della socializzazione, vincitrice bando Stars @ Unipd 2019 e ospitata presso il Dipartimento di Psicologia dello sviluppo e della socializzazione) con il progetto Infant verbal Memory IN Development: a window for understanding language constraints and brain plasticity from birth.

«Un’ottima notizia per il nostro Ateneo. Cominciare così l’ottocentesimo anno di vita è veramente rinfrancante: le tre ricercatrici e il ricercatore che hanno ottenuto l’ERC Starting Grants ci restituiscono, e permettetemi una punta d’orgoglio nel poter dire ancora una volta, l’altissima qualità della ricerca che si svolge nell’Università di Padova. E mai come ora, nel combattere la pandemia, l’importanza della ricerca è sotto gli occhi di tutti – afferma Daniela Mapelli, rettrice dell’Università di Padova –. Proprio nell’anno in cui celebriamo la nostra storia, ovvero le conquiste ottenute da donne e uomini nel corso di questi otto secoli, è fondamentale l’attenzione al futuro: i risultati che otteniamo sono per noi sempre punto di partenza, mai punto di arrivo. Le politiche di Ateneo messe in atto negli ultimi anni per incoraggiare l’indipendenza dei giovani e stimolare la loro capacità progettuale stanno dando i loro frutti. I profili delle tre vincitrici e del vincitore evidenziano l’ampiezza tematica delle ricerche condotte nel nostro Ateneo ed i suoi caratteri di inclusività ed apertura internazionale.

A livello nazionale, ci deve far riflettere il fatto che sono arrivati in Italia 28 grant (quinti in Europa), ma che i ricercatori di nazionalità italiana premiati, includendo quelli all’estero, sono 58 (secondi in Europa).»   

Sono stati 397 in totale i giovani ricercatori vincitori del bando 2021 che punta a sostenere ricercatrici e ricercatori emergenti 

Le sovvenzioni, per un valore complessivo di 619 milioni di euro, rientrano nell'ambito del progetto Horizon Europe.
I finanziamenti del valore medio di 1,5 milioni di euro, sono destinati a sostenere i giovani ricercatori a sviluppare e promuove i propri progetti in vari ambiti di studio e ricerca.
Ad ottenere buona parte dei finanziamenti (il 43%), sono state ricercatrici donne, in aumento rispetto a quanto ottenuto dalle stesse l’anno precedente, pari al 37%.

Le vincitrici e vincitori del bando, provengono da 45 diversi paesi e sono in particolare tedeschi (67), italiani (58), francesi (44) e olandesi (27). Questi hanno proposto di sviluppare i propri progetti di ricerca presso università e centri di ricerca di 22 paesi dell'Unione Europea e associati, soprattutto in Germania (72 progetti), Francia (53), Regno Unito (46) e Paesi Bassi (44).

Cominciare così l’ottocentesimo anno di vita è veramente rinfrancante: le tre ricercatrici e il ricercatore che hanno ottenuto l’ERC Starting Grants ci restituiscono, e permettetemi una punta d’orgoglio nel poter dire ancora una volta, l’altissima qualità della ricerca che si svolge nell’Università di Padova. Sono stati 397 in totale i giovani ricercatori vincitori del bando 2021 che punta a sostenere ricercatrici e ricercatori emergenti 

Le sovvenzioni, per un valore complessivo di 619 milioni di euro, rientrano nell'ambito del progetto Horizon Europe.
I finanziamenti del valore medio di 1,5 milioni di euro, sono destinati a sostenere i giovani ricercatori a sviluppare e promuove i propri progetti in vari ambiti di studio e ricerca.
Ad ottenere buona parte dei finanziamenti (il 43%), sono state ricercatrici donne, in aumento rispetto a quanto ottenuto dalle stesse l’anno precedente, pari al 37%.

Le vincitrici e vincitori del bando, provengono da 45 diversi paesi e sono in particolare tedeschi (67), italiani (58), francesi (44) e olandesi (27). Questi hanno proposto di sviluppare i propri progetti di ricerca presso università e centri di ricerca di 22 paesi dell'Unione Europea e associati, soprattutto in Germania (72 progetti), Francia (53), Regno Unito (46) e Paesi Bassi (44).

Le politiche di Ateneo messe in atto negli ultimi anni per incoraggiare l’indipendenza dei giovani e stimolare la loro capacità progettuale stanno dando i loro frutti. I profili delle tre vincitrici e del vincitore evidenziano l’ampiezza tematica delle ricerche condotte nel nostro Ateneo ed i suoi caratteri di inclusività ed apertura internazionale.

A livello nazionale, ci deve far riflettere il fatto che sono arrivati in Italia 28 grant (quinti in Europa), ma che i ricercatori di nazionalità italiana premiati, includendo quelli all’estero, sono 58 (secondi in Europa).»   

Sono stati 397 in totale i giovani ricercatori vincitori del bando 2021 che punta a sostenere ricercatrici e ricercatori emergenti 

Le sovvenzioni, per un valore complessivo di 619 milioni di euro, rientrano nell'ambito del progetto Horizon Europe.
I finanziamenti del valore medio di 1,5 milioni di euro, sono destinati a sostenere i giovani ricercatori a sviluppare e promuove i propri progetti in vari ambiti di studio e ricerca.
Ad ottenere buona parte dei finanziamenti (il 43%), sono state ricercatrici donne, in aumento rispetto a quanto ottenuto dalle stesse l’anno precedente, pari al 37%.

Le vincitrici e vincitori del bando, provengono da 45 diversi paesi e sono in particolare tedeschi (67), italiani (58), francesi (44) e olandesi (27). Questi hanno proposto di sviluppare i propri progetti di ricerca presso università e centri di ricerca di 22 paesi dell'Unione Europea e associati, soprattutto in Germania (72 progetti), Francia (53), Regno Unito (46) e Paesi Bassi (44).

Sono stati 397 in totale i giovani ricercatori vincitori del bando 2021 che punta a sostenere ricercatrici e ricercatori emergenti 

Le sovvenzioni, per un valore complessivo di 619 milioni di euro, rientrano nell'ambito del progetto Horizon Europe.
I finanziamenti del valore medio di 1,5 milioni di euro, sono destinati a sostenere i giovani ricercatori a sviluppare e promuove i propri progetti in vari ambiti di studio e ricerca.
Ad ottenere buona parte dei finanziamenti (il 43%), sono state ricercatrici donne, in aumento rispetto a quanto ottenuto dalle stesse l’anno precedente, pari al 37%.

Le vincitrici e vincitori del bando, provengono da 45 diversi paesi e sono in particolare tedeschi (67), italiani (58), francesi (44) e olandesi (27). Questi hanno proposto di sviluppare i propri progetti di ricerca presso università e centri di ricerca di 22 paesi dell'Unione Europea e associati, soprattutto in Germania (72 progetti), Francia (53), Regno Unito (46) e Paesi Bassi (44).

Sono quattro in totale le ricercatrici e i ricercatori che hanno vinto il prestigioso European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grants e hanno scelto l'Ateneo di Padova come propria Host Institution che si conferma l'Ateneo in Italia con il maggior numero di finanziamenti ottenuti nell'ambito del programma a sostegno della ricerca. Per un totale di 28 grants in Host Institutions italiane, il nostro Paese si colloca al quinto posto in Europa.

In totale dalla nascita di ERC nel 2007 l’Università di Padova ha ottenuto a oggi il finanziamento di ben 50 progetti di ricerca. Tre gli ambiti di finanziamento degli ERC: Physical Sciences and Engineering, Life Sciences, e Social Sciences and Humanities, tutti e tre rappresentati dai ricercatori dell’Università di Padova che si sono aggiudicati il finanziamento. Si tratta di Luca Dell'Amico (ricercatore presso il Dipartimento di Scienze chimiche e ospitato presso Dipartimento di Scienze chimiche) con il progetto dal titolo Synthetic Bimodal Photoredox Catalysis: Unlocking New Sustainable Light-Driven Reactivity, Ludovica Galeazzo " (I Tatti, the Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies e ospitata presso il Dipartimento dei Beni Culturali: archeologia, storia dell’arte, del cinema e della musica) con il progettoVenice's Nissology. Reframing the Lagoon City as an Archipelago: A Model for Spatial and Temporal Urban Analysis (16th-21st centuries),Martha Giovanna Pamato> (assegnista di ricerca presso il Dipartimento di Geoscienze, già Msca Fellow di Unipd e ospitata presso il Dipartimento dei Geoscienze) con il progetto Diamonds as the key to unravel the origin of Earth's water e Silvia Benavides-Varela (ricercatrice presso il Dipartimento di Psicologia dello sviluppo e della socializzazione, vincitrice bando Stars @ Unipd 2019 e ospitata presso il Dipartimento di Psicologia dello sviluppo e della socializzazione) con il progetto Infant verbal Memory IN Development: a window for understanding language constraints and brain plasticity from birth.

«Un’ottima notizia per il nostro Ateneo. Cominciare così l’ottocentesimo anno di vita è veramente rinfrancante: le tre ricercatrici e il ricercatore che hanno ottenuto l’ERC Starting Grants ci restituiscono, e permettetemi una punta d’orgoglio nel poter dire ancora una volta, l’altissima qualità della ricerca che si svolge nell’Università di Padova. E mai come ora, nel combattere la pandemia, l’importanza della ricerca è sotto gli occhi di tutti – afferma Daniela Mapelli, rettrice dell’Università di Padova –. Proprio nell’anno in cui celebriamo la nostra storia, ovvero le conquiste ottenute da donne e uomini nel corso di questi otto secoli, è fondamentale l’attenzione al futuro: i risultati che otteniamo sono per noi sempre punto di partenza, mai punto di arrivo. «I dati in aumento sulle immatricolazioni rappresentano un ottimo viatico per l’inizio di un anno così importante, l’ottocentesimo della nostra storia – afferma Daniela Mapelli, rettrice dell’Università di Padova –. Quei millequattrocento ragazzi e ragazze in più che hanno scelto il nostro Ateneo, infatti, sono la dimostrazione del sempre crescente appeal dell’Università di Padova, a livello nazionale e internazionale, e sono una felice ipoteca di un buon futuro. Oltretutto confermiamo la tendenza alla crescita di un Ateneo che non ha mai visto calare i propri iscritti negli ultimi anni, in controtendenza con le dinamiche nazionali. Non solo: il risultato ottenuto conferma la bontà delle scelte effettuate negli ultimi anni sulla didattica, con lo sforzo di rendere l’offerta formativa più ampia e attuale, sempre più su misura rispetto alle esigenze di studentesse e studenti e di quanto richiesto dal mercato del lavoro».
