The Platanus orientalis has been chosen to represent Padua Botanical Garden in the Italian Tree of the Year 2022 contest, established with the aim of celebrating trees as natural and cultural heritage to love and protect. The Oriental Plane is the oldest tree in the Botanical Garden and, despite age-related ailments and a deep 'wound' (probably caused by lightning), which crosses its trunk from top to bottom, every single day it welcomes visitors at the entrance with its majestic appearance.

The challengers are the huge banyan (Ficus macrophylla f. columnaris) of Palermo Botanical Garden, the Australian gem (Agathis robusta) of Rome Botanical Garden and the prickly paperbark (Melaleuca Styphelioides) of Naples Botanical Garden. The contest was launched during the Festival della Sostenibilità di Aquileia “Non Siamo Atlantide”. It is possible to vote until November 20, 2022: the winner will be announced on the World Tree Day, celebrated every year on November 21, and will have the honour to represent Italy in the European Tree of the Year 2023 contest.

Organised by the EPA (Environmental Partnership Association) since 2011 to promote the history of trees, as well as their connection to the people, the territory and the environment, the contest Tree of the Year includes nowadays 16 European countries. Italy has been participating since 2019 thanks to the Giant Trees Foundation, which organises the national contest in collaboration and with the support of the Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies.

You can vote for the Oriental Plane every day until November 20.

We can proudly claim to be a University as ancient as it is contemporary, yet our quality and innovative programs in both teaching and research are something deeply rooted in our territory and in the community in which it is located. The slogan of the 800th anniversary celebrations: “800 years old, and still learning," Such a statement encourages us not to fear confrontation with other universities, but to project ourselves into the future by continuing to be a reference point higher education and for excellence in research."

Prepared by one of the most prestigious and internationally recognized ranking agencies, Times Higher Education released the 2023 results of the World University Ranking (THE-WUR) on Wednesday 12 October.

The publication marks the University of Padua with improvements in its performance on a national level by gaining 3rd place out of the 55 Italian universities considered. At an international level, UniPD confirms its positioning in the 201st - 250th place range, despite the increase in the number of universities THE evaluated, which grew from 1,662 in the 2022 edition (published in September 2021) to 1799 in this edition.

THE evaluates selected universities based on five dimensions: teaching, research, citations, technology transfer and internationalization.
Data is collected from the databases of scientific publications or from questionnaires submitted to academics and companies, which are supplemented by the data provided by the selected universities themselves.

Compared to previous years, the 2023 results show that the University of Padua has increased its overall ranking. Significant improvements are noted in the micro-parameters of teaching and research, as well as in technology transfer which is measured as income from businesses. The University gained 62 positions in the Teaching dimension, jumping from 192nd to 130th place worldwide. With regards to its Research dimension, the University gained 22 positions, moving from 308th the 286th place worldwide, and for Knowledge Transfer (Industry Income) the University gained 211 positions, advancing from 716th to 505th position worldwide.

Other dynamic parameters, such as the citations indicator, confirms the University with a high score (80.9 out of 100) based on the quality and bibliometric impact of its scientific production.

Comments by the University of Padua Rector Daniela Mapelli, "The THE-WUR evaluation is proof of the University’s growth, which is earmarked on a scale of comparison with the world’s most important universities.
