An important risk factor for marine biodiversity, as well as for fishing, is represented by biological invasions. The increase in coastal environments of non-indigenous species may cause extensive damage to its ecosystems. These invasive species, including the well-known blue crab along the Adriatic, are often facilitated by climate change. Their proliferation favors geographical movements and together with other human impacts, disturbs coastal ecosystems by decreasing their ability to resist such biological invasions. The Venice Lagoon sees a rapidly changing ecosystem subject to intense naval traffic (a typical vector for the introduction of invasive species) and numerous other human activities.

A study published in Hydrobiologia by the Department of Biology of the University of Padua, in collaboration with the National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics of Trieste, entitled “Assessing the impact of the invasive ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi on artisanal fisheries in the Venice Lagoon: an interdisciplinary approach” documents the recent massive invasion of sea walnuts (Mnemiopsis leidyi) in the Venice Lagoon.

The study explains how the explosion of sea walnuts since 2014 is connected to the increase in water temperature. The work highlights the negative impact of this invasive species on the traditional fishery methods found in the Venice Lagoon that use fyke nets (locally called “cogolli”).

Although the sea walnut is gelatinous, and typically only a few centimeters long, it completely clogs fyke nets and is a voracious predator of plankton and larvae which are valuable for the fishing industry.

Held in English, the University of Padua hosts on May 13 Tiles and puzzles, the Lectio magistralis by Stanislav Smirnov (Université de Genève) 2010 Fields Medal.
He was awarded the Fields Medal in 2010 for the proof of conformal invariance of percolation and the planar Ising model in statistical physics.

Suppose we are given (an infinite supply of) a few different tiles (puzzle-pieces). Can one tile the whole plane? How many tilings will there be for a given area?
If there are many, how a random one will look like? The event is the occasion to discuss how even for simple tiles, like two di
fferent polygons, these problems become very interesting and relate to many areas, from logic to statistical physics.

The event is available exclusively on the University YouTube channel.

The event is organized by the departments of Mathematics and Physics and Astronomy at the University of Padua, COST Action CA22113, MSCA Seal of Excellence @UniPD 2022 program (CluES project).

Held in English, the University of Padua hosts the Nobel Lecture by Carl Wieman on Friday, 10 May (10.30 a.m.) in the Aula Magna of Palazzo del Bo. The 2001 Nobel laureate in physics was awarded the illustrious prize with Eric A. Cornell and Wolfgang Ketterle, “for the achievement of Bose-Einstein condensation in dilute gases of alkali atoms, and for early fundamental studies of the properties of the condensates”.

Institutional greetings from Marina De Rossi, delegate for Teacher Education and delegate for Innovative Teaching, and Flavio Seno, director of the "Galileo Galilei" Department of Physics and Astronomy, opened the meeting.

For almost 20 years, Wieman has promoted initiatives for the innovation of university teaching in STEM disciplines, including the Carl Wieman Science Education Initiative at the University of British Columbia. With work published in high-impact journals and summarized in his book “Improving How Universities Teach Science" (Harvard University Press, Cambridge, 2017), Prof Wieman arrives in Padua to share his findings.

The Nobel Lecture at the University of Padua by the professor of Physics and Education at Stanford University discusses his scientific approach to education in the fields of science and engineering with an introduction by Marta Carli, researcher at the Department of Physics and Astronomy "Galileo Galilei. People in the audience have the opportunity to dialogue with Carl Wieman and Marta Carli in a Q&A session at the end of the conference.

The Nobel Lecture on 10 May at Palazzo Bo is open to the public but registration is required.

Live streaming of the event is available on the University’s dedicated YouTube channel.

On Thursday 9 May at 3 pm, Carl Wieman offers a seminar on “How to learn to think like a good physicist and how to teach it” for faculty members of the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Padua in the Aula Rostagni of the same department via Paolotti 9 in Padua.
