In addition to the destruction of forests throughout north-eastern Italy, the 2018 Vaia storm also brought serious consequence with the proliferation of a small beetle that is naturally present in the same forests. The large quantity of fallen spruce trees after Vaia and the increase in temperatures have allowed the bark beetle populations to grow from an endemic to an epidemic, compromising the ability of the forest to regenerate and continue to offer ecosystem services.
The bark beetle epidemic is the focus of the exhibition of the photographic project by environmentalist photojournalist Michele Lapini, which will be inaugurated on Tuesday 15 October in the ancient courtyard of Palazzo del Bo, during the Eco-emozioni donor event.
The exhibition, open to the public from 16 October to January 1, tells the story of the devastating effects that the parasite is causing in numerous wooded areas of the Veneto region.
An emergency to which the University of Padua has responded by launching a campaign aimed at financing two three-year research doctorates in Forestry and Entomology, coordinated by the TESAF and DAFNAE Departments of the University of Padua, will focus on the epidemic and study new prevention methods and tools. Open to the public for free, the exhibition begins on October 16 in the Cortile Antico of Palazzo Bo: Monday to Friday from 7:30 to 19:30, Saturday and Sunday from 9:30 to 17:30.
The exhibition was made possible thanks to the support of the Cariparo Foundation and the Association of Friends of the University of Padua.
