The international ranking agency QS has today published the results of the third edition of the QS Sustainability Ranking, the latest addition to the Quacquarelli & Simmonds ranking family. The University of Padua has placed first in Italy, 53rd in Europe, and 110th globally, out of a total of 1,751 universities worldwide that were admitted and considered in the comparison.

The evaluation was conducted by QS, in collaboration with Elsevier, Yale University, and the Academic Freedom Index, starting from the set of universities already analysed by the global QS WUR ranking, further selecting them based on the sustainability policies developed by the universities in relation to sustainable development. Three areas were considered: social (weight 45%), environmental (45%), and governance (10%), according to the lenses of an ESG (Environment - Social - Governance) approach that offers an alternative vision to the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) of the United Nations Agenda 2030.

In the "social" area, indicators are considered that evaluate: the policies implemented by a university in relation to gender equality, equal opportunities, inclusion, and combating discrimination (Equality, weight 12%); opportunities for future employment for students and research partnerships with industry (Employability and Outcomes, 10%); the inclination of universities to collaborate with other organisations and share and transfer knowledge to universities in developing countries (Knowledge Exchange, 10%); the impact each university has on the dissemination and improvement of education (Impact on Education, 7%); and last but not least, the university’s focus on promoting health and personal wellbeing (Health & Wellbeing, 5%).

In the "environmental" area, the education offered to students on environmental topics (Environmental Education, 17%), the partnership agreements, policies, and strategies implemented by the university to achieve net zero, i.e., greenhouse gas emission neutrality (Environmental Sustainability, 15%), and the research conducted on sustainable energy and production topics, linked to specific UN SDGs (Environmental Research, 13%) are evaluated.

According to QS, for an institution to be sustainable and impact sustainability, the aspect of "good governance" should not be neglected, summarised in the third area corresponding to Good Governance (10%), which includes the presence of quality leadership, the adoption of transparent and documented decision-making processes, engagement with social partners in the territory, and the involvement of the student body.

In addition to its overall result, the University of Padua excels in the environmental area and in the individual indicators of Environmental Research, Environmental Sustainability, and Health & Wellbeing.

«An excellent result that rewards the constant commitment of the University of Padua towards sustainable and responsible growth,» comments Daniela Mapelli, Rector of the University of Padua. «Growth that passes through the quality of teaching and the variety of the educational offer, but also through theoretical and applied research into new ways of producing energy and goods. We hope that our innovation will help society reduce its impact on the ecosystem that hosts us. The University of Padua has undertaken important initiatives to reduce CO2 emissions, promoting sustainable mobility, energy efficiency of structures, and responsible resource management. On the topic of inclusion and equity, we offer, among various initiatives, scholarships and targeted support programmes, promoting equal opportunities for students regardless of their economic or social background, with particular attention to those trying to escape dramatic geopolitical situations. The recognition we have received is not a point of arrival, but it encourages us to continue on this path, with an eye towards a future in which our university can continue to be a model of reference and sustainability.»
