Giacomo Vinci completed his Ph.D. at the University of Udine in May 2015 in archaeology. From 2016, he held postdoc positions at the Multidisciplinary Lab of the ICTP and the Universities of Trieste and Siena. He joined the Dept. of Geosciences at Padua University at the end of 2022, as fixed-term researcher.
He has wide experience in the study of archaeological landscapes, mainly centred on the prehistoric and protohistoric periods. His background includes remote sensing techniques, GIS-based spatial analyses and fieldwork to investigate settlement dynamics and paleo-environments. Recently, he integrated this geo-archaeological approach with the study of vegetation history and human impact, mainly based on pollen analysis.
His current SOE project, under the supervision of prof. Alessandro Fontana, explores the interplay between community and environment in the northern Adriatic to understand how anthropogenic processes can influence long-term landscape change and how late prehistoric local communities faced important environmental issues, as sea-level rise. For this scope, he will investigate settlement forms, geomorphological setting, vegetation cover and human impact through the analysis of core samples collected at selected sites and other non-invasive techniques. Results obtained will fill a major gap in the knowledge of these periods and, at the same time, will enhance the awareness of present-day local communities to climate change.
