Lukáš Alán is an experienced researcher whose interests focus on cellular metabolism and bioenergetics, and in particular on substrate utilisation by mitochondria. He received his PhD at the Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic, while working at the Institute of Physiology of the Czech Academy of Sciences on mitochondrial DNA biology. Later, he worked there as an associated researcher in the field of the mitochondrial ATP synthase assembly. Lukas is among the first pioneers using the super-resolution microscopy to describe mitochondrial DNA maintenance and biology. In 2019, Lukas won a MSCA Individual Fellowship for Mitobetes project under the supervision of Prof. Luca Scorrano at the Department of Biology at the University of Padova. Here, Lukas was investigating the function of Vwa8 protein in relation to mitochondrial substrate selection. Recently, Lukas was awarded by PNRR Young Researchers – MSCA funding scheme with a project called Combesity to extend the Vwa8 project to the field of adipose tissue biology to understand how we can stimulate white adipose tissue to produce more thermo-active mitochondria, which would burn the fat instead of its storage and thus help with world obesity pandemics. This project is also supervised by Prof. Luca Scorrano at the Department of Biology.
